BP Build Component Recommendations
« on: March 01, 2016, 11:55:49 AM »

Inb4 Search the forum. I gave it ten minutes, and finding nothing closely related to my question, which I thusly pose:

Has anyone BUILT their BP before they put it in, and if so, did you remain N/A or turbo? What did you leave stock, what did you fiddle with?

Looking for recommendations on internal bearings, rods, cranks, cams...

Yes I have. What you build will be determined by what you plan to do with it. I have the rotating assembly balanced..from experience of not doing this. Clutch and flywheel as well. Clearance values are of the utmost importance as well. The BP crank is  a forged piece and the stock rods are plenty good for any mild boost. You can use the B6t rods or even the sturdier GTR rods. The pistons should be scrutinized for wear..any question replace them. Standard 9:1 cr will work as well for a mild boost level. If you plan to run big boost look for lower cr like the 8.5 bp26 pistons...not likely to find new ones though so maybe moot there. You can always go aftermarket like Wiseco. Cams will depend on n/a or boost. BP26 cams are best for boost. As for the head, bp05 will give more room up top but the bp26 head will give more low end grunt. If you are e going n/a use the OEM intake...turbo is best with the GTR intake manifold. Bearings will likely be by preference but ACL is a good bearing.

Goal is turbo, built, streetable DD in the 300-350hp range. I'm aiming at a TD05 20g for now, and I was considering building a custom intake manifold, as the base motor is from an EGT with VICS.

Your hurdle will be the engine management... Likely megasquirt .....and the g series tranny holding that power.

I would only go to megasquirt if a rocketchip would not provide decent results off the bat, but it has been on my chalkboard since the inception of this build.

As far as the transmission goes, I have started another thread requesting rumour control concerning a supposedly stronger Kia trans that would bolt up. No replies to it yet, but the views counted on it fuels my hope for a reply soon.

Also, since both Google and Wikipedia are failing me, what in the hell is a BP26, is that a BP-Z3?

Bp26 is the 1.8 turbo motor from the BG GTX...where you will need to source some parts from. KIA tranny is good. Rocketchip will not support 300+ HP.

Hey Gaz check out the ClubProtege forum, and search around the BF 323 Section for GTX/BP turbo builds. Considering these cars are pretty much the same alot applies and only a few people have done a BP swap here. They would know more, more thank likely and Rocket is on there too.

To what Kia trans are you referring, K24? 95-97 Sephia, right?

What should I do once I acquire said transmission? Fifth gear? Different clutch? What am I looking for?

Even with the Kia trans at 300-350 hp you'll be dancing with the limits of the Gtype

I used a bone stock Escort GT engine and slapped a VJ20/Tbird hybrid on it in the GTXR2. Plenty of power. BP has a LOT more low end grunt than even the best modded XR2

I ran the stock BP with the hybrid at ~12psi on B6T electronics/rocketchip and had no issues with mechanical reliability. Had some electrical gremlins that wound up parking the car, but likely due to my own errors rather than anything else.
Rocketchip will definitely not take you to your goals.

Could you elaborate on those gremlins?

Where WILL Rocketchip take me, safely?
