replacing head gasket
« on: October 21, 2010, 01:34:00 AM »

im new to the capri world, not a novice on the mechanical side. I cant get the head off to change out the head gasket. Is there something on the intake side that im missing? I can lift the head from the front, but cant get it off the block. this is driving me crazy! I cant see if there sis anythin still connected from the intake side of the block. I havent taken the intake off the head either. I was told from a mercury mechanic that i shouldnt have to. Any ideas?

There is a bracket supporting the underside of the intake manifold from the block. You'll need to remove that, the head should pop right off then.

To the underside of the intake with two bolts yes. Not visible from to top of the engine.

Take a look at my website, under the "progress" pages. The pictures are old but show a teardown and the bracket should be visible. Its always good to see what you are dealing with!

Rocket- could there be anything else that would make this car smoke out the ass. finally got the head off and the gasket dosent look torn, ripped or worn. when i bought the car a mechanic diagnosed it as a head gasket. i just spoke with the  previous owner and he had the lower hose replaced and it was smoking from that point out. im gonna take the head in to have it magnafluxd to see if there is a crack. any info would be greatly appreciated

What color smoke? Generally overheated capris have warped heads, put a straightedge across it. Did you compression check it before ripping it apart?

compression is good, white smoke, used a drywall tsquare and its all good. should i take the head in or put it back together and see what happens?
