Oil Pressure Questions
« on: May 06, 2016, 09:54:20 AM »

Hi everyone, I'm brand new to the site. I just picked up a 91 XR2. It has 104k with a new timing belt. Seems to be a common theme with these cars, but after it warms up, the oil pressure guage reads frighteningly low, and nearly bottoms out when stopped. There are no noises from the engine, and no spikes in temperature.  Is this just a faulty sensor? I was thinking of testing the pressure, but it looks like a royal pain to get the sensor out. Any thoughts?

Extremely common.....chances are, your factory pressure sender is leaking, causing the low readings.

I carry new replacement sending units, if you're interested in changing it....

I've learned to ignore my oil pressure gauge....I just make sure the oil is topped off and cruise.

Thanks guys. Russ, if you have a decent tutorial on how to best get at the unit, I'd be interested in talking to you about a replacement.

I do not....The last time I did one, I had the front end jacked up and sitting on jack stands...I crawled underneath, and there is a surprising amount of room to work with, once you're under there. I found it to be much easier than trying to reach around the block...

I may try to do a step-by-step pictorial later this summer....thanks for the idea!

Great, I'll get under there and have a look when I install the shifter bushings you're sending me!

Mines doing the same thing. I also hear a drip on the oil pan after driving it. I wonder if it's as simple as the sender leaking. I don't know exactly where it's at so I haven't checked yet

I'm going to get under the car tomorrow if it's not raining. I'll let you know.

So I got under the car to replace the shifter bushings (thanks Russ!) And change the oil. Even with the oil filter off, I couldn't see the pressure sending unit. I'm wondering if it would be easier to remove the turbo and go at it from the top? If there were any real issues with the oil pressure, how long would it take for the motor to start knocking?

The oil pressure sending unit is the round silver cylinder located at the 10/11 O’clock position from the oil filter and is underneath the black metel bracket.

This thread has some good photos in it showing its location.

Not long... these engines have HLAs (hydraulic lift adjusters)
