detailed photos of the mitsu 14-b on my car
« on: July 18, 2010, 01:09:00 PM »

ive been getting questions about the turbo i run. so heres some detailed pics for ya to look at, to try and help explain what goes into this rather large mod....

to fit the dsm turbo with our stock mani is more complicated than it looks... nickel rod must be used with a stick welder..(has to get hot)
to weld to cast steel... the flange must be slid as far forward as possible...  and milling must be done to make recesses for the bolts...

this is my corksport downpipe that i cut the flange off of and welded a tdo5 4 bolt flange to.

you can see now that the wastegate dump pipe is short. so when full boost is created the car gets quite loud.. youve got to be over 4,000 to do it
so its not like it just going to open on regular driving routines...

its a 14b coldside and wheel...

with a 16g (next step up in the mitsu line of turbos) center-comp.and wheel i could make up over the 250 bhp mark thats so hard to get to...

Is that small short pipe just dumping to atmosphere?? Looks like a tite fit. Did you have to machine the actuall exhuast manifold? I now have 3 manifolds, 1 that is perfect, one with a small crack, and one that is junk. I'm going to pull the AC also, to make more room, move the battery to the back. The pictures that Matt ran of his intake is also what I will try to do, shorten it up and make it as straight as possible. Bend some aluminum, like you did Joe, to keep it dry and suck some cooler air. Rewire the fuel pump tmrro. Got a monday off, but have to work on sat.

Hey Joe, I'm sitting here digging through ZXtuner's pages and ran across the hirev camshaft sets. Do you know anything about these? Also the solid cam tappets that seem like they go with the cams say they are not for the XR2's?? Have you changed the cams in your car? Any input... Shit-it is a decent price for the cams @ $359.99, if they help out.

solid lifter tappets for the zetec 2.0 engine are the same, but cams are totally different...

i actually have a complete gude head package for a zetec motor, cams, ported and polished head, oversized valves, and solid tappets... trust me if anything other than the tappets would work, id already have them in the car... HKS and toda japan both make camshafts for the b6 engines but ther both priced over 500.00 the todas are 800.00

yes you need to machine out the 4 corners to acomodate for the bolts, they are studs and pass up through the flange rather than bolts that thread into the mani...  luckily the manifolds are really thick and allow for alot of machining before getting too thin... my manifold is also ported out from the inside, all 4 runners and the flange end to mate to the larger td05 hotside.. its a very tight squeeze but the power is so worth it...
to clear the coldside of the turbo you must also trim a small block off the front of the tranny but its very little...
to use the corksport downpipe you need to grind out some of the oil pan on the tranny side for it to fit....

Kind of related, just installed WEB cams on Russ's SuperRoo, HOLY SHIT what a difference...not only in power but  in sound as well...sounds freakin amazing. They're much higher lift, I think perhaps it makes it an interference engine... anyone know?

oh yeah, we had a zetec goin with the gude head package it has oversized valves and springs and retainers, a ported and polished head and cams and it sounds like a damn nascar engine running it was just an amazing sounding rig...
had the obx header and a greddy evo exhaust system...
i still have the head package.. and one day my idea for a real motor swap would be a 2.0 ford zetec with the head package and then turbo it... ill bet on 18psi it would make 350 or so hp
i would however change the fuel system over to a normal returning fuel system.. instead of the stock returnless setup...   just a thought...

god, now I know I need the cams, shit when I bought the timing belt, cork sport said they had adjustable cam gears, but I would only need them if I changed the cams. I had opted out, but now... any body need a coin collection?? ((-LOL just kidding-))
