Title: XR2 Questions
Post by: Gostlrs on January 30, 2009, 04:57:00 PM
Hi new to the boards, i wish the internet was the way it is now when i had my capri 10 years ago. i am a repeat owner and looking to make this one in to a sleeper. not many people know what the car is especially knowing it has a turbo. here are my questions.

1. Which end caps on the front mount intercooler works the best

2. what is max boost the stock turbo can handle with intake and exhaust mods only

3. what is a good upgrade turbo and safe running boost

4. if i have these mods done can i expect 200-250HP?  Intake, 3in exhaust, larger turbo and injectors, ECU upgrade, FM intercooler

anyone have any other go fast ideas please let me know. i will pick my car up next week and plan on the upgrades ASAP

welcome to the forums and nice looking car!

although im not the resident expert here, i can offer my knowledge...

without doing an ecu upgrade, do not run the stock turbo over 10psi, it'll asplode. A RocketChip ecu upgrade has the fuel map for up to 16psi, and can raise your rev limiter to 7200rpm

You can drill the airbox or modify for a cone air intake (i personally prefer the drilled airbox, unless you go for a complete custom intake job) However, in doing so the stock bypass valve will begin to 'moo'.

in my opionion, $500 should get you a RocketChip, new spark plugs, air box mod, BOV, and a boost controller... trust me, it'll make a big difference. When i turn down my car from 16psi to 6psi... im amazed at how slow a stock x2 is.

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x298/grantgorgen/Capri/Photo0159.jpg (http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x298/grantgorgen/Capri/Photo0159.jpg)

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x298/grantgorgen/Capri/Photo0158.jpg (http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x298/grantgorgen/Capri/Photo0158.jpg)

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x298/grantgorgen/Capri/Photo0157.jpg (http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x298/grantgorgen/Capri/Photo0157.jpg)

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x298/grantgorgen/Capri/Photo0152.jpg (http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x298/grantgorgen/Capri/Photo0152.jpg)

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x298/grantgorgen/Capri/Photo0151.jpg (http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x298/grantgorgen/Capri/Photo0151.jpg)

as you can see, the stock intake is quite restrictive... this doesn't even show the few 90 degree bends the air has to take after the filter to get to the turbo. A drilling the airbox does wonders, but from experience the drilled airbox is better than a cone intake that has not been moved to be closer to the turbo.

I'll take a whack at your questions:

1. I found these end caps to work best, I used 90* silicone couplers to help cram it in behind the bumper. Otherwise it would have required running piping through the lower fender area and I wanted to keep the intake volume to a minimum. http://www.werbatfik.com/uplimg/fmic/fmic1.jpg (http://www.werbatfik.com/uplimg/fmic/fmic1.jpg)

I dont recall off the top of my head what size the fmic but I can find out if you need it.

2. You'll be able to run 16psi of boost on the stock turbo without burning it up. Anything more is overspooling and it still generates a substantial amount of heat at 16psi. You will need fuel upgrades to run any more than 10psi though or you will run the risk of melting pistons. A larger exhaust (especially a turbo-back) will tend to generate massive boost creep and spiking...so try to coordinate your fuel upgrades along with your exhaust.

3. There is a very nice hybrid turbo that can be made for the capri using the hotside and center section from a stock turbo and the compressor from a Ford Probe/MX6 turbo. Its called a VJ14/VJ11 hybrid. It flows some 30%+ more than stock and it will spool quicker, all while holding 16psi to redline (the stock turbo will have a hard time doing that). 16psi is a good number to stick with, even with that particular hybrid any more will be sticking it past its efficiency range.

4.Your stock injectors will do fine for the time being. They're around 320cc. You could expect 180-230hp with a turbo upgrade...I've seen people making 190hp on a stock turbo before though.

Also, find a strutbar...and find some wider wheels and throw some sticky tires on them. You'll need it.

Thanks, i already have some 17's sitting in the garage, i was going to use them on my 280 but since that one is not running they will get used here. strut bar is for sure one of the first things i get. who makes a nice one for this car? i do not want a skinny bar i like them to be meaty

i bought the one on craigs list, i pick it up this weekend as long as my damn tax refund gets here like it said. funny thing was i went to look at a caprice with an LT1 and 20's on it and drove past it when i was test driving it and told my son i use to own that car long time ago. if i found a nice one again i would get it. then 3 days later that same exact one showed up on craigs list. it was like fate. i call him, drove it and bought it. the dash has a crack and the seats need redone. body is in good shape and needs a top. something is up with it when it boost. but i can take care of all those things pretty easy. i figure 1000 for car and 1000 more to get it where i want it.

Hey Gost! You can go across he border and have the top and seats done for $500. I done three of my capris in Tijuana like that. I have a few more in need but it's been so dangerous the last 18 months.  Gus

no need for that i am in Phoenix there are so many shops around here. i am thinking on getting some aftermarket seats and then get the cover that goes over the back seat and remove the seat and turn that into a speaker enclosure so i can keep the trunk.

It will bolt up to the stock manifold but your exhaust downpipe will need to be custom. You'll need a VJ11 dump pipe if its not included

i plan on a custom exhaust anyways, i have not seen any 3in ones for this car, once i get emissions done on it i will take it to the same shop i did my eclipse, they did a full 3in exhaust for me for 250, but that was like 7 years ago.

You'll have a very hard time fitting 3" over the axle, and you'll scrape a lot running under. Max over the axle is around 2.5"

Who sells a decent 2.5" exhaust for these?

Noone offers an aftermarket exhaust.

MCCM offered one on ebay but I think it was a take-off from a parts car they got.

I'll sell my complete exhaust but it's 2.25, I felt it was safer for clearance and even with my mods I don't think I needed 2.5".  My exhaust was custom bent and is downpipe back, no cat, and with a magnaflow muffler, and chrome tip.  It would suck to ship, so pickup preferred.  I was hoping who ever bought the car would just take that too.  There are a ton of parts left on the car, the only thing taken off the body were the clear corners at this point and the Ground control coilovers.  Sorry kind of jacked the post.

hmmm i guess i could have them do a 2.5 until after the axle then open up to a 3in. emissions suck but this company is a work around. if you have collectors insurance then yoou do not need emissions. once i start to build this car i will see if it can be insured by them
