I will be basically running a custom exhaust shop in St. Cloud. I can build most systems to suit, using my own XR2 as a template, building the system/component on my car to ensure fitment. Oddball systems that may have different turbos/motors may be more difficult, and usually require the vehicle on site. We also can fabricate downpipes and headers.
I have yet to work out prices, including shipping, so this is more of a feeler post to gauge community interest. For us, by us...;)

Nobody? If it helps, my mentor has been at this for 45 years, and we have been known to satisfy both the eye, the ear, and the wallet.

Id been down for a custon twin side pipe set up, but its too far away. Maybe whenever the Annual Capri Meet happens i might come through if i have the cash. Any ideas on prices?
-
If you could make one for a 1994 NA with aftermarket mufflers I'd be interested. Would the pipes be mandrel bent?

Prices will depend on the diameter of the piping, whether it'll be mild steel or stainless, compression or mandrel bent, painted or coated...all that good stuff. We could most likely accommodate shipping to the lower 48, as well. I have to speak with my old man tonight to see what the ballpark is for things like these, but in my experience, it'll be a bit difficult to nail something down without being at said shop. I'll have to take a weekend and drive down to build one for testing purposes. You may not necessarily have to bring your vehicle, but having you (the customer) there to choose mufflers, tips, sizing, material, makes everything go so much smoother. It would be foolish of me to build a system, then have it be vastly undesirable in an already small market, to drive that point home.
Having said that, I'll be using my own XR2 as the template and jig, so as to remain accurate with my bending.
And I love a good road trip. haha

Yes, we can mandrel bend, but unless your NA is some sort of speed demon, it's really more of an aesthetic choice, that of which I do not advise as it raises cost. Compression bent tubing should suit your needs just fine. All mufflers that aren't OEM are technically aftermarket, was there any brand or product that caught your eye?
Also, feel free to participate on the poll at the top of the page! :)

A bolt-in turbo-back that looks stock would be pretty sweet, but only if the price is right. Exhaust shops are aplenty out here in California, but many don't like working on 'newer' cars. As in, newer than 1975. ::)

I've noticed that, how the customer base year varies in relation to the harshness of the climate. Places that expose cars to more rust than Cali, or any other better region, they will work on pretty much anything.
-
Cat-back would be great to have, crazy to ship
Downpipe offered seperate might be a better option than a full turbo-back system.
The bend over the rear subframe is a crazy complicated one
-
I think a turbo exhaust manifold or even N/A headers would have a larger market cuz they could also fit a wider range of vehicles.
-
Plus we all have cracked manifolds from the factory, so.

To a man that has a hammer, every problem is a nail.
Shipping really wouldn't be that bad, and there is always the ability to pick it up at a meet. \
I suppose I could ship whatever you need separately. Header, mid-pipe, rear section... (Dual outlet could maybe be shipped in two pieces if you don't mind an additional flange back there.)
-
I would be all over a 2 1/2" down pipe...
-
I would be all over a 2 1/2" down pipe...
I'm planning on making a run of those, mandrel bent. I'm debating on whether or not to try to make a spring flange end so it can just be plug and play, but deleting that and putting in a flex pipe would be better.
This venue will be getting off the ground soon, I'll just have folks PM me requests and I'll provide a quote soon thereafter. Easier to keep track of, that way.
-
I would realy be interestet in an exhaust system. Catback and 2,5" is what i am looking for. But think it would be to expansive to ship it to germany right?

Insanely. Just trying to get those lenses to you increased prices tenfold...

I (AND OTHERS I AM SURE)

I would LOVE a set of 4-2-1 headers for normally aspirated models. if not, a 4 to 1 would be fine.

I don't have a speed demon and was thinking of a Flowmaster exhaust. Maybe 2.25" pipe without the cat or resonator? I don't know if this would sound muscular or junky.
-
I've been crunching some numbers, and came up with these quotes so far. All prices exclude shipping, as that's going to be a case-by-case quote, and are subject to change. This is being said from the R&D stage, and we should be able to put out real products within 90 days. Please direct SERIOUS inquiries to my inbox, so I can keep track of everything while we are gearing up for building up pipes for our whips.
Basic turbo header, Aluminized 1.75" primaries: +- $365. Stainless: $410
Ramhorn turbo header, Aluminized 1.75" primaries: +- $435 Stainless: $550
Cat-back side pipes, 2.25" Aluminized, side pipe turn-outs +- $350
Cat back 2.25 N/A system 14ga Aluminized with Magnaflow +-$225
2.5" Downpipe $185 Aluminized
More to follow, hit me up.
-
For the downpipe - I would suggest offering a standard 2-bolt flange, with an extra weld-on flange. Trying to mate a 2.5" downpipe to a stock exhaust (1.75" at best) is not ideal. I do think plug'n'play is good but not really beneficial in this case
I'd be down for the downpipe. Does your quote include replacing the stock cast dump pipe, and if so, will the new downpipe interfere with the A/C system? Real estate is very tight between the two down there.
I can provide some photos of a CorkSport downpipe with the divorced wastegate dump, if that will help. It bolted directly to the turbo and replaced the cast dump quite nicely

Yeah, we can include a flange. It is built to spec, after all. Normally, I can't assume that even half of this market can, or are willing to, weld it on themselves, hence the plug and play aspect. I can, however, assume that anyone that would want one has already enlarged the rest of the exhaust, and simply wants a downpipe to match. It would end in roughly that same location as our spring flanges.
As far as design goes, I've seen that pipe, and I like it. The problem is finding those outlet flanges is damn near impossible, and they aren't readily available when I do. To create a one-piece downpipe like that would require more material, including tubing, which puts it up to $270-ish for something like that, and It would not be stainless. Not that anybody drives their Capri in the winter, anyway, but if I didn't say it...
I'll design it so it doesn't hit the compressor, so no worries there.
The bend over the rear subframe is a crazy complicated one
Yeah, it wasn't that fun, but I did it. ;D
More Shtuff:

$450, Mandrel, aluminized.

Cat back 2.25 N/A system 14ga Aluminized with Magnaflow +-$225
So no resonator? Totally plug-and-play all the way out the back for a 1994 (Walker says it needs a spout)? With clamps, gaskets, rubber insulators? What model Magnaflow are you thinking?
-
Very good prices Gaz, I might need to save some money, and try to get a exhaust! Id like to see some pics whenever you start on yours.
-
Yeah that flange is a tough one, but so are most of the flanges for this car. Where's the downpipe flange coming from? it's not standard. Re- the manifolds -the exhaust flange on the head can be had ($$$) but AFAIK the IHI turbo flange is not available anywhere either
-
So if I wanted to get a 2.25" exhaust done up, would I just need a downpipe and let a local place do the rest? Or what would be the best way?
I'm tearing off the turbo and starting the process of reconditioning the car in a week or so, so now's as good a time as any to start looking at exhaust options now that the hybrid with the ported wastegate is going on.
-
Please move this thread to Vendor section, admin.

Depends on what they quote for that. It's just a matter of money, at that point.

I'll have to fabricate them.

I'll have to check prices on the rezzy, my setup doesn't have one. I'll also have to check which model of MagnaFlow I used, I can't recall. The kit assumes you will reuse your old insulators, but we can offer new ones for a price. I'll get on this and get back to you.
-
Okay, so my current setup does not have a rezzy in it, but if you want one, it'll be an additional $36. The MagnaFlow 11132 is what will be included in the kit. This is also what I have on my setup. There is also a thrush muffler available for half the price of the MF.
TL;DR: Cat back 2.25 N/A system 14ga Aluminized with no-name resonator, Magnaflow muffler $270 Thrush muffler, $230.
If y'all could help me out and post pics of the flange after the catalytic converter, that would be great, as neither of my systems have it. :D
-
Thanks, I'm becoming more interested. I don't want the resonator and want the Magnaflow muffler. I want to make sure it fits a 1994. Here is the picture from RockAuto of the Walker muffler system.

unless there is some crucial difference between the 94 and the others, besides being naturally aspirated, then I don't see an issue.
-

There is no difference between the 91-93's, and the 19994 exhaust systems.......they are identical, across all 4 years.
-
I thought as much.
So, I built a compression bent 2.25 downpipe, with a flex pipe, removed the cat and spring flange and all that restrictive garbage. Thing ROARS now. I think I'll put up a YouTube video about it.
-

Yeah thats sucks. Shipping cost are so expensive thats realy unbelievable. Your prices for the exhaust system are relay good. In germany we would pay about 2 or 3 times of your price for a custom build exhaust.
For examble. If i will buy some pipes, flex pipes and muffler and some liitle things like flange... i wil pay more than 250 euro (about 280-300 dollar i think) for this. And than i had to build it on my own.
-
I'll be attending the 15th MACG in Crete, so if anyone want's me to build something and bring it, I can do that.
-
Did you ever get that youtube video up? I'd love to see and hear your new exhaust. It would help advertise as well!
-
Oh balls. I'll get on that.

Do we get a discount if we drive 13 hours to get to your shop?

I wouldn't rule it out, but that's up to the old man.

First order is being built TODAY!

:o
OMG am I first???
If so, I've gotta research more on boost creep. My current exhaust is shot, so not sure how much more free flowing this will be? I'm happy enough with performance, more want the car to sound better LOL
From what I've been able to read on here, creep is an issue, but I ought to be safe enough trying it out and seeing how bad an issue it is for me, if at all. (I won't grenade the engine immediately anyways.) I know the time to do it is when hanging this pipe, but time is at a premium for me lately, and I fear pulling apart the turbo to port the waste gate is more than I can get done in a day (plus the rest of the exhaust.)
Anyways I can't wait to see and hear how the new exhaust is on my car. Will take pics and post em if I can figure out how...

Any videos on sound of this exhaust?

If you want, I can build you one just like this and ship it for $400 total. It's 2.25" dump pipe back, single exit.
-
The moment I have that cash laying around, I'll probably do exactly that. :D Excellent work, especially that bend over the rear. Glad the resonance didn't seem to be affected!

Surprisingly enough, that 18" resonator does a lot for that system. My existing system doesn't have one and it drones, to a fault. Perhaps I could use a shorter resonator to give it a bit of grumble back.

That definetly will be something ill do once I get further in my build. Is there any chance you could do a custom down pipe for a Garret GT2560r turbo? Currently my car is a N/A, so i wouldnt be able to use the system till I get it boosted.
-
It would be guesswork unless I had either the car, the turbo and manifold, or a very detailed blueprint.
-
I'm very interested. Sounds like you work at Tim's Custom Exhaust. I was already talking to someone there.
-
Thanks for posting the videos. The exhaust tone is better, but still to farty for me. Is there a different muffler (flowmaster, etc) or something else that will reduce the ricer sound? I'm seeking a throatier rumble. Thanks.

I thought it was too ricer for me as well (tho honestly I wonder what can be done with a 4 cyl turbo) but have you only watched the videos on your phone? It made a huge difference listening to it when I played it on my PC with only decent speakers - it sounded much better / deeper. My phone really couldn't reproduce the sound well. Much better bass with stand alone speakers. (I did not try headphones with my phone however.)
I should receive my exhaust today, and hope to install this weekend. Anything has to sound better than my current leaky pipes lol
Will report back with installation experience.

Yeah, not a whole lot can be done with a small, turbo 4 without getting a somewhat unacceptable drone. Upon completion of building that system, I reinstalled my straight-to-magnflow-11132 and put on a single exit to replace the split dual I had on it before. What I noticed was that the extra 4 feet of pipe on the dual setup certainly boasted better resonance and deeper tone, unlike the single exit, and the large, flat tips certainly had an interesting finishing tone to them.
I built Cav's system to be a daily driver sport exhaust rather than the I'm-16-and-obnoxious-pipes-are-lit-fam-bro nastiness a fart can would offer, and I hope I've hit my mark.

I'll play with systems next time I'm out at the shop.

I suppose the easier question would be what defines a ricey exhaust. Tone won't change much with these cars, but certainly one should come to expect the baseline for which I have not the words to adequately describe how it should sound.
Also, I will try for side pipes soon, here.
-
Got it on today.
More mellow than I expected from video. Sounds good when you rrally get on it, but nice at cruise.
System mounted up good and solid. I never did an entire exhaust myself, but it wasn't bad at all after removing original. Harder jacking up the car to have enough clearance to work. Old pipe and muffler was in much worse shape than I thought.
I did cheat and go to a muffler shop to have em get the bolts freed up from the turbo. Thank god as all 3 studs ended up getting replaced. (I would've let them install it as it was already on their lift, but they wouldn't as it eliminated the cat.) Got good gaskets from them as well - the ones at autozone and advanced were very thin on the edge away from the bolts. Ones I got from the shop fit properly. A little of the hi temp copper (orange) permatex and she bolted right up.
Very pleased with the fitment.
I didn't go on a far drive, but liked the sound and didn't notice any dreaded and feared turbo creep. Will get her out tomorrow on the interstate and open her up a bit. :)
As thick as the pipe was, and over all condition of my car, I didn't bother to paint it. It'll likely outlive the car anyways. LOL
Will live with it for a week, and post another update.
Thanks again for a well made product!

What's this now?

Week 1 update:
Love the exhaust. At a steady cruise it's unobtrusive. Put your foot into it in the turbo band and I love the way it sounds. I have experienced zero symptoms of turbo creep even without porting the waste gate. (Thank god... just something I don't have time for right now.)
For a daily driver, I am very satisfied.
Anyone in the Buffalo NY area that'd like to check it out let me know. As close to plug and play as I could imagine. No silly clamps - all bolted together and feels very secure. One factory hanger was not used, and I assume it's because of how you have to get it around the rear end of the car.... if it was welded on, you'd never get it out. I was going to take it to the same shop that I had replace the turbo manifold studs, but haven't bothered yet as it doesn't seem to really need it. Entire assembly seems very robust. (They'd just have to weld on a rod to attach to factory rubber hanger. Assume cost if I'd want it done to be negligible.)
I'd say it seems my car revs a bit freer, but I really haven't owned the car long enough to state that for sure so can't comment on any performance gains. However, she SOUNDS faster! ;)
Thanks again for a quality product at a fair price!

Gaz if you have faceebook post on the 1991-1994 Mercury Capri Group that you make exhaust systems you should get some bites there.
Im currently saving money for my build, and I plan on buying a blown turbo so i can send it to you so I can get a downpipe and exhaust built.

Good thinking!
When you say blown turbo, are you referring to something that's different? Different than our vj11?
-
Yea I plan on getting 2 Garret GT2560r's one thats blown so I can send to you to make up a downpipe for and then later have as a back up after its rebuilt. The other is going to be put on the BP im getting.
-
Word up! Does it bolt up to the stock manifold?
-
Nope it bolts up to a t3 manifold though. You can get those pretty cheap from most Miata aftermarket places. I wouldnt really switch to it on these engines because the spool would take forever.
-
I would need to know which manifold you'll be using for it, then. Can't accurately build much of anything without it.
-
Like, a picture or whatnot.

Sorry I took so long to get back to you, I just started work full time. By the end of next month ill have a GTX so ill be swapping in the stock GTX/XR-2 bits in, after I buy a Festiva or something cheap.
I dont plan on doing the BP swap for another couple months, once I figure out what manifold ill use ill make sure to post a pic of it on here.

Any luck?
-
Curently waiting on Russ to finish moving so he can deliver the GTX, once I have it ill be working on it in the little spare time I have. Im kinda waiting and just turboing the BP instead of the B6, that would give me time to sort out issues with the GTX transmission.

Hey Gaz im intrested in picking up a exhaust soon.
Id like 2.5inch downpipe back, with high flow cat, no resonator. You choose the muffler, im looking for something that sounds like a old rally car with nots of pops and crackles. If you could id like it to have tips exiting out the side by the rear wheel.
PM me a price, and I should be able to work something out soon.
-

Just a heads up, this comes more from the tuning than it does from the exhaust itself

And bouncing off the rev limiter?
-
That might do it too :)
From what I understand it's from aggressive spark timing & fueling.
I believe they intentionally tune certain cars these days to have a burble.
Shouldn't be hard to do the same with a standalone ECU
here's some external discussion:

http://www.miataturbo.net/ecus-tuning-54/adding-little-burble-exhaust-under-decel-using-fuel-afr-target-timing-74296/
They mention fuel cut on decel. The XR2 ecu cuts fuel on decel until it hits 2500 rpm or so, when it re-engages. This can be easily observed with a WBO2 system
Myriad of other discussion on a google search, on how to get the 'burble'

Alrighty, I'll be starting to work on these starting June first. I ask that if you has stated that you want one built, that you could send a request to my email so I can track and bill easier. Garretrombal@gmail.com

Gaz - I'm still interested in a daily driver version for a 1994 NA. What does the end tip look like? I'd like it to look nice (shiny, I guess) as opposed to something that will rust in a year. I'm not interested in buying a chrome exhaust tip from Walker to add on to it. What could you do for appearance?

Any magnaflow tip I can get my hands on. http://support.magnaflow.com/02product/02tips.asp

Perfect. I assume a 2.25" ID inlet. Therefore part #35122 or #35163, as long as you could weld it on at the correct spot to it sticks out at the stock position (not too short and not too long).

Nickolas Mott uploaded a video of the kit I built! Radical.

Gaz.... what is the makeup of that kit and cost? I am in eastern NC, zip 28590, if you can give me a shipping estimate as well. I have a 92 xr2 that I bought a few months ago. I have not done anything to it yet, but it needs brakes, paint job and exhaust, so I may consider what you are doing. I really don't plan to do much else to it except get a rocketchip from Matt and open the boost a little.
thanks....John

I'll be putting together prices more accurately over the next week, so stay tuned for that.
All of the kits I've built so far are aluminized steel with mild steel flanges, which will last a while as long as you don't drive in the winter and was your undercarriage periodically. It's mostly a cost thing, as stainless costs so much more than standard aluminized.
As far as turning up the boost, our stock wastegate ports are too small to effectively control boost after exhaust modification, so I'd put that on your to-do list before opening up the exhaust on that bad boy.
-
I understand you concern on boost control. I know some of the folks on the facebook group are advocates for not going larger than 2" if you are wanting to bump up the boost and keep it simple. Simple is where I am at for my age these days. I am in eastern NC, so winters are not harsh and we only drive our capris on nice days.
-
I could certainly build you a 2" kit if you like, I would recommend doing standard compression bent exhaust at that point, as it adds a smaller percentage of flow reduction than its mandrel counterpart.
-
I would be happy to look at the price for 2" as well and let me smoke this over to decide how far I want to go. I am not interested in ricer sound. Prefer something more deeper or throatier sounding. The last video you had posted on this thread was starting to sound pretty good to me. I have two xr2's, 92 and 94 and my wife has 94 NA, so opportunity for multiple systems across some time exist here. If the header becomes reality, I would consider trying it on one of the xr2's.
-
Right on. I'm hoping to get on the dyno once I port the wastegate, just to have a baseline for what this header should do.
-
Maybe I missed it, what's the cost on one of these systems? 2.25"
-
$400 Shipped with Magnaflow muffler and tip.
-
Single Dual Power (hp)
2.0 2.0 100
2.25 2.0 150
2.5 2.0 200
Here's a guide for what size y'all should order for your respective vehicle.
-
I'm looking for a custom header for my stock turbo and probably the down pipe to the muffler is like to go as big as I could I have a cold air intake and the rocket chip up to 16lbs of boost

I'd like a custom header and exhaust

If you are still making them I'd be interested

Yessir, I am!

Well, this will be a huge disappointment. I will not have any time before I deploy to make these systems. It's just been a bad time with my house and now I have to sell my jig car to make my mortgage payment so that effectively eliminates the possibility of making these kits at the moment. When I come back into the states, I'll try to get a rust-free example from Arizona that I wanted in the first place. Only then will I resume making these kits.
-
Stay safe Gaz! Look forward to your return. I still have some systems for you to build.
-
Sorry to hear that Gaz.
Did you have any fixtures made for making the exhausts off-vehicle? Or you just had them fitted to your one Capri every time you had an order?

I have not built a jig for these. Should have, but they can be inaccurate.

Since a 1991 in New York State does not require emissions I am pondering the idea of doing a straight 2.25 exhaust from manifold and dumping right behind passenger front tire. I can't imagine these 1.6 motors being too loud without a muffler and cat. Any feedback on this idea?

Not all that dissimilar from the fiat 500 abarth, and IMO those sound super dope. Give it a shot, I've been tempted to do something similar. Although, probably with a cutout

Hard part is finding an exhaust shop that will A) build custom exhaust pipes with a bender and B) has stainless steel available. So far I've only found shops that will r&r factory exhaust as they don't have either a pipe bender or they have a bender but noone skilled to use it effectively.
I miss the old days where a custom exhaust shop was on just about every street corner..m.of course that was before the government hammered down on emissions.

Unsure where in NY you're at, but I know a few exhaust shops down by me. There's a shop in Greenwood Lake (NY/NJ border area, around Middletown) that does full restorations, and they also do custom exhaust stuff. I was talking to the owner about how $$$ I would burn if I wanted to go with titanium (it's quite a lot lol)
