replacing tranny seals
« on: August 22, 2009, 10:18:00 AM »

pulled both halfshafts to replace the output seals on the tranny that were leaking.
not hard at all and man these things are soooooo easy to work on.

I just unbolted the spindle, removed the duct tape tie rods (STFU), and unbolted the sway bar links. came right out and put everything back together.

I did both sides so now I have both trannys seals and both outter tie rod ends. When I got to the passenger side I found the duct tape fix over there to.

yeah the duct tape on both sides had me saying WTF the whole time I worked on it.

but now I have new tie rod ends that are much tighter than duct tape. lol

the input shaft seal sucks since you have to pull the tranny to get to it. if you do decide to do it though  I am sure you know to do the rear main on the engine while your there.

I am sending you those pics today too so we can settle up on what I am going to owe you.

As for the title of this thread:  1.  How do you get the seals into heels.  2. Are they pre or post op seals.  3.  Do Tranny seals go clubbing? (now thats funny, I don't care who you are)  (get it, clubbing/seals?)

Just a few questions.  Have a nice day.

Hey Philippe!  That brings memories of a joke that involves a seal driving his capri through the arizona dessert.  Too funny!

well I originally bought both seals at pep boys and thought they were not installer friendlly. I installed the driver side and it went in ok.

I tore the passenger side trying to install it and went to Autozone and bought a Timken 2007N. It was MUCH easier to install and took seconds compared to to the minutes with the other trying not to rip it.

The timken units are nice and flat on the outer portion so you can knock them in nice and even with a socket "1 5/8 to be exact.

The pepboys unit is now leaking so I will be going back in there today and throwing a timken unit in its place.

just a fyi for those who take the job on.

the pepboys unit was made by SKF and is sku# 14129

I DO NOT recommend though considering what I stated above.
