catch can...
« on: December 16, 2009, 12:44:00 PM »

well, with the talk of my catch can setup...
in joshes post about catch cans..
i went ahead and ordered a new one ..
it came in the mail today...

as a kind of experiment i ordered the cheapest catch can ebay had, from a reputable seller...
it was 22 bucks shipped to my door...
and shipping was fast...

this is what i got... the can ,hose, all clamps, and fittings, including a handy PCV valve adaptor fitting for the fat side of the PCV...

i was actually impressed with the quality for the price ... its a nice little can...

so i got busy.. first i took the breather off the valvecover, cut the hose to length, and prepped the bracket.
i got lucky, and the pcv adaptor was a perfect fit for my breather...
i ran the hoses and this is what i came up with...

so now i took the assembly outside and put it in the car....
i have a really easy mounting place, becuase my radiator had a mounting hole handy...
if you do one you may have to get a little more crafty as to where to put it...

there, now im catching any residual oil on either side of the engine...

what do you guys think???

Gost... i guess you could cut the hose shorter..
you cant get too close or the filter will touch the other hose...

joshua... ive started my wire tuck.. it got cold and i havent been able to finish, but its about half tucked... there all there.. just tucked behind and below the intake manifold...and lower on the firewall...  i eventually plan to hide everything including the engine groundwire kit, and most vaccume lines....

Did the catch can have anything inside it to actually catch the oil?
I have a Greddy can that came empty so I filled it up with some stainless steel scrubbers (Yes those thins you use in the kitchen) to catch all the oil mist .....works a treat
I will try to find a photo of my engine bay.

it didnt come with media of any sort, but i didnt want anything in the front can...
the rear can where the pcv valve is, is filled with fine steel wool to catch some of the crap...

the front catch is to catch the little blowby at higher rpms... the rear one is actually in line for the pcv and will fill slowly (about once every couple months... i empty it when it gets about 1/4 full... it usually comes out as a coffee with cream color mixture of water and oil...

i still run my airbox but i have it taken off for the winter.. no sence in trying to get colder air when its 40* outside

i also had to cut and place cardboard in front of my radiator to get it so it would blow heat while moving down the road...id guess about 80% of my radiator is blocked with the cardboard...
it still runs at about 180* (not much heat) but its at least kicking down from high idle now...

heres the deal... if you only want to run one catch can , run it in the back and run a breather on the valve cover.....

the reason we run two, is to catch the residual that will enevidably drip from said breather on the valvecover....
this oil drips on your tranny and makes a mess...

Joe-it looks bitchin' bro! Man i played hell with mine. Moved things around then blew up the first turbo, blew oil all over. Put the 2nd turbo on and put the can back, then turbo #3 and haven't had to empty the can once. Then I have read about how important they are on turbo engines. Lots of crankcase pressures and shit. still reading. Keep up the good work! your whole engine compartment is 'almost' as clean as mine!! I love keepin them clean, just spent 3 hours yesterday cleaning and polishing mine up.

hey does the hieght of where you put the can make a differance? like should it be above the top of the motor, you know, mine is down low, and doesn't seem to make any differance. Looks great joe- bump.
