That makes sense, port it after the rebuild.
Yeah, we don't know what it needs until you get in there.
I started this thread concerning the harmonic balancer
Should I begin one concerning this turbo rebuild ?
There will be followup on the harmonic balancer, and I will suggest to my mechanic to check the #4 plug wire.

I have 1 of the VJ11 compressor housings and wheels left for now and I was letting it go for 45.00 shipped. I normally get 75 for them and have sold quite a few of them. It is a fair bit of work getting them out of the car.  Do you want it?? as I have it posted on 2 other sites and have some tire kickers looking.

Matt, this is quite an education for us all.  I never heard of someone setting the timing, and have the car run ok, by using the #4 wire rather than the #1.  That would explain why the timing mark was exactly at the bottom of the rotation rather than at the top, near the mark on the block.

Azgtx, send out the info on the guy who can do the hybrid.
A guy from a shop near San Diego quoted the following:
$405 for the rebuild.
$150 for turbine wheel.
$95 for compressor wheel.
$200 for machining out the wastegate to the size of a nickel, as suggested on this site.

Do the turbine wheel and compressor wheels need replacing?  Do they wear out?
This will be good info for others doing the hybrid, and ultimately getting Rocket's chip.
Big decisions, but gotta get confidently back on the road.

No, they didn't set the timing with the #4 lead. There's not enough adjustment in the distributor to do that. And it would not run with timing set that far off.

It was set with #1 lead in the past. And then when they checked it after installing the balancer, they used the wrong lead. This would cause the mark to appear 180° off, as #4 fires 180° from #1. At least thats my guess anyway. Your mechanics seem a bit sketch to be perfectly honest.

Your price quotes for the turbo work are a little looney. All said and done (if you provide them the upgrade compressor and housing with your stock turbo) it should run around ~$500 with one of the two shops I linked to.

Thanks for the heads up on the timing leads.
Will have it checked.
Also recontact your linked sources on turbo.
The shop I checked is about an hour from me. Pure Turbos.
