By chance does anyone know of a replacement for the stock fuel sender. Both my cars are bad and I'm guessing I'm not alone.

In searching for a sender, a 323 sender was suggested and I don't know if it'll fit, but they are available for $200+. While I was looking, I ran across a company that rebuilds them. They said Capri senders usually costs between $75 and $175 to rebuild. So that is definitely an option.

I Just go to the wreckers and look for any BF or BG car, dig out the fuel pump assembly and take any good coils from the sender. Then resolder them into my GTX senders. Problem solved for pennies really. Just make sure there are no breaks in the wire winding. Look for lower mile cars of course but check any you find. I think there may be a write up on ClubProtege or the yahoo GTX forum on rewinding them. Honestly that is all the guy above is going to do.

There is an XR2 in High Point and I think I'll take a ride down there one day and see what that one looks like.

My Capri doesn't have a low fuel light.
The Capri and BF323's fuel sender are both just a basic variable resistor to ground.

The eBay fuel sender description says w/o low fuel light. My fuel sender has a metal bulb attached to it with a wire going to the two wire connector. The bulb is attached to the sender via a heavy wire which also provides the ground. The 323 sender does not have this bulb. I assumed this was for the low level light.

Thanks Falcon, I pulled the trigger on the one on eBay for $35. It appears to be the same. I hope to get it installed tomorrow. After getting it I wondered what the small bulb on the side of the old one was.

Installed the 323 fuel sender over the weekend. Still doesn't work. Gonna do some troubleshooting when I have time. Wish me luck. It does fit perfectly though.

You are correct, the float(metal bulb) is a low level switch. When the fuel level goes below the float, it disconnects the ground from the sender. The gauge with a low level light would sense the open circuit and then turn the light on.
The standard BF323 had no low level light, while the GT did.
According to the moderncapripart website, they offer a sender with the float and a slightly cheaper but still overpriced alternative without.
The first thing I would do is jumper the yellow wire(sender unit’s output signal), located under the seat that goes into the fuel sender assembly to ground. After you ground out this wire, turn the ignition switch on and you should see the fuel gauge max out.
If the gauge maxes out, then you’ll know the signal wire and the gauge itself are working.
