We currently have several layers of spam protection built into the forum (Captcha, Are you Human, etc) and they have cut registrations down but have not killed it completely. Over the last few days they have increased again so I'm trying out a new addon, it's quite powerful compared to everything else and hooks into a central database. Have to give it a few days to see how it works.
