Where is the Engine coolant temperature sensor
« on: September 20, 2009, 05:28:00 PM »

Okay, so my car runs fine now after the timming belt change and the new half shafts, front brakes, bearins, waterpump and all. However, just when the car is in old, it seems to have a slight hesitation and it goes away when it gets hot.

I was thinking I need to check the engine temperature sensor ( Now the fan switch). Does anybody know where it is on the XR2? Also, does anyone have some suggestions as to what I should be looking at other than that. Also, the car has new pcv, new spark plugs, new wires, new air filter, new gas filter.

alright guys, the larger one with one wire that "points" at the drivers side is the fan controll temperature switch...at a certain temp(arround 200*) it kicks the cooling fan on ...

the smaller one facing back at the firewall with one wire is the guage controll switch (gives the guage in the dash the temp) this is also the one you replace when you run an aftermarket water temp guage.....

and theres one more on the back of the intake manifold, out back of the idle air controll... right below where the bung for the heater core comes out at.. this is a two wire switch, and the wire runs from your injector harness, over the top and down to it and has a connector like an injector, or like the idle air controll has
with the PITA piece of wire in it... this is the ECUs water temp guage, and is the one yall are talking about......

now if you unplug the first one ...the fan will stay on all the time but wont affect engine performance at all...

if you unplug the second one you will lose your guage reading but wont affect engine performance at all ....

if you unplug the third one, out back of the motor... you will not get a temp reading to the ecu, and the car will run rich, and burn alot of gas, and just run poorly ....

BUT.... my car also has the same thing... it will hesitate, and under higher boost pressure it will even break up, until the car heats up... and is completely normal... where the car is trying to warm itself up, and idles higher, and runs rich trying to do so....
they all do it, and its normal, just let it warm up before you go gassin on it......

  Your welcome.....Joe...RCI

Damn! You may have solved my problem!!  The Super Roo is running ultra rich (like 125 miles to the tank!), and my temp gauge doesn't work most of the time... I gotta get this checked out!

Yep, you ARE the man!!

hey russ, also, is your VAM siting at a level and upright position??? when i was messing with intake configurations i found if you put it at too much an angle, you will keep the flapper open a bit, and the car will run alot richer
...i found the way arround this but it is complicated, and involves tearing the black lid off the VAM and "reclocking" it a couple teeth to tighten up the spring, to close a bit further under idle.. and to compensate for the airdraw of the 14 b turbo on the idle....this is very complicated and advanced theory.. like just below rocket chipping your own ecu advanced theory... so if and when you get there well talk more about it.....Joe..

The VAM is level.  My bet is the wire to the senser was not hooked up when the new motor was installed, or perhaps it was damaged. But, it's a great place to start, as the car is going in tomorrow, anyway- I have an oil leak we need to track down and seal before the NorthEast meet.
