Title: 91 base non-turbo running issues
Post by: the Yeti on November 23, 2022, 12:25:10 PM
I have a 91 non-turbo with 91k one owner miles with 2 issues: poor idling (rough) and when it does run, will not go above 25 mph.  I have replaced the fuel pump (43 psi), throttle position sensor, ecu, and mass air sensor.  Also checked to see if the cat was plugged (not), drained the tank and flushed the fuel system with fresh gas.  Fuel filter is OK.  Plugs and wires were replaced.  Still no change in behavior.  For the past 10 years or so car has been kept in central Florida.

Any thoughts on a cure would be greatly appreciated...thank you!

Welcome the Yeti!

Check for vacuum leaks. The plastic intake pipe that runs from the VAF to the throttle body tends to crack near the bellows and let in un-metered air. When the engine moves in its mounts in drive it can open up and let more air in too.
Worth looking over the vacuum lines as well.

Thanks for tip, I will ask my mechanic to check it out. He did check the other vacuum lines and they were fine.  I did not mention that it is a 5-speed, not an automatic...sorry!
