Piston help
« on: March 05, 2012, 11:51:00 AM »

I have a melted piston in my 91 XR2 and have been looking for one through every parts source I could find. NAPA shows one online but I cant cross the part number to make sure it is for a turbo engine. Looked on Wiseco's site and couldnt find anything. I have a parts car but really didnt want to tear down a good engine for one part.

You can get stock cast pistons for a 1.6L Miata - they're the same save for the compression ratio. Bumping the compression doesn't hurt, it makes the car much more responsive & it's safe as long as you keep using premium fuel.

The stock XR2 pistons are 7.9:1 CR which is pretty low, the 9.0's work really well

Obviously with the 9.0 compression you would also run premium fuel, but the cost is worth it when the car cranks that good.

Should be using premium with a turbo car either way.
