VALVE COVER
« on: July 18, 2010, 12:57:00 PM »

Hi yall im into a large job on the shark. I have the valve cover off cause im going to clean it and paint it. I have 2 questions,1st. Does the inside need to be painted? I want to get the inside real clean. There are 2 plates with screws in them and gaskets underneath. If i remove those plates the gaskets will have to be replaced. Question 2, if i remove those plates can i buy the gaskets?

I wouldn't remove the inside plates. If you do remove them they can be resealed with RTV silicone sealant. DO NOT paint the inside.

I sent a valved cover out for paint, now I really wish I had gotton it powder coated instead. Next time it will be PCed. I removed the bottom 2 things from the valve cover and didn't use or make new gaskets, ended up really leaking major oil into my catch can, freaked me out, I thought I'd blown another turbo!! I then cut a new gasket out of silicone and boom, took rite good care of the problem!!!

YEAH I LEFT THOSE TWO PLATES ON THE BOTTOM ALONE. Thanks to rocketman. It just looked like a train wreck waiting to happen. I bought some good engine paint and primer im gonna diy it. I think 2 or 3 coats of primer and 3 or 4 on the paint the paint and primer is rated at 650 deg im also gonna redo my intake man to since it is off to,,,,

some good advice for painting the valve cover ... is if you can get the valve cover super clean just get some high temp enamel paint and before you paint the valve cover put the cover in the oven at like 200 degrees just get it hot to the touch but not to hot and it will help the paint kind of "cook" and stick on and it will make it look really good. thats what i did to my stuff when i painted it and it turned out very good. but i also had mine sand blasted before paint.
