SQUEAL ON START UP
« on: November 14, 2009, 12:25:00 PM »

Hello All -
I have a '93 non-turbo. Every now & then I hear a "squeal" on start-up.It sometimes stops in just a few seconds but sometimes continues until I travel a block or so. Sometimes just putting car in gear stops it.Ocassionally it lasts longer. It usually occurs after overnight or all day parking.
I assumed loose belts, but tension seems ok.
My shop manual doesn't give me any more ideas...
Does anybody have any ideas?
Thanks,
Phil

Hey Pothos! If belt tension is fine then two things come to mind. Belt surfaces are highly polished and belt doesn't grab. Try scratching the surface of the pulleys with an ice pick or awl. The other is the bearing of the alternator is starting to seize and the unit will soon need replacement. Gus

Sounds like improper torque.  The alternator has to be pushed to tighten it, and the power steering pump  bolt has to be tightened to tighten the front belt.
