running out of time....
« on: July 10, 2013, 05:14:00 AM »

Not sure how many also are on yahoo capri group. Entire saga there.

here's the latest:
Well not sure what I did.

I pulled the radiator fuse to give it a bit more power to start (fan always
comes on w/ key) i sprayed starting fluid down the throttle body, a squirt
under 2 spark plugs, and it started to sound like it wanted to go. i kept
pumping the gas it would sputter and hold around 250 rpm then kind of hold at
500 then all of a sudden whoosh 1k then 2k then it was running. ran great
holding my foot on the gas at 3k. did that for like 3 minutes. drop down to 1k
back up seemed okay.

let go, rpm dropped to around 500k spitting and sputtering.... back up to 3k was
okay. started getting warm wanted to put the fuse back in. i did (couldn't hold
gas at same time) and the draw from that killed it.

I can't get it started again!!!

I had turned the distributor just slightly thinking it would help it run better.
was only like 1/4 to 1/2 cm, but that did something and now wont work. even
when engine was hot I was thinking if it would restart now is the best time.....

I really don't know what I'm doing here. Don't know which way is better to try
to turn the dist to make it run. I did unhook the tps to throw the computer in
steady state to make it try to start better.... as it ignores a lot of inputs to
make it run...

what now?? This seems like it should be something so simple. I think it
wouldn't have run that long if the fuel pump wasn't working at least okay... and
that should have cleared up any bad gas in the lines between the filter and the
spark plugs... yeah gas a bit old, but it's half and half so that shouldn't be
my entire problem.

I'm really trying to be careful as I can't afford to burn out my starter.

backstory:
car drove to IL from NC a year ago. 5 miles from home coolant leak. shut off, towed, left

tried starting in march. no dice.

changed distributor and computer. has spark. fuel pours out of filter when cranked. ran about 1-2 qt out of it.  had 1/4 tank gas when parked. added another 1/4 fresh. cant get higher, gas tank leak. new tank in NC waiting.

have to leave today, really need the car. this is a hail mary

Plug the TPS back in.

Try pulling codes. Any codes?

Bad gas has left me frustrated and digging for problems that didn't exist on more than one occasion. If you have a place to put it, drain the fuel and run as much fresh fuel as possible, the higher the octane the better. If not, dump in dry gas, injector cleaner, and a can of B12 chemtool. Circulate it or let it sit a day.

Double check that you have spark on the tachometer.

Try putting the distributor back to where it was when the car was running fine. You shouldn't need to move it to help the car get started. That's an old V8 trick. That could explain the super low idle & bogging.

If it ran a on starting fluid, you are having a fuel or fuel delivery issue here... my bet would be bad gas.

Thanks. all good tips.

had good spark. fuel was prob ok. i did run fuel pump about 1-2 qts to clean out those lines.
whether or not the pressure was good, i donno, but it sure poured out.

spent $80 on a mobile mechanic. he tested compression. 25 on one, 65 on another. one had 85. told him to quit testing....

game over

not something i have the time or money for right now, esp living out of state. the good news is that it was due for water pump and timing belt.

so sad. many new parts. new cat/muffler/exhaust. brand new tires, new dist, new alternator, brakes, rotors, wheel bearings, etc etc etc.

Just needs a head gasket then? Would be worth fixing IMO considering all the new parts. Where in NC are you?

It's probably going to be at least summer before I'm out that way :/ Did you make a new account here, want me to merge them for you?
