Yeah HDR is High Dynamic Range...basically the images are supposed to be closer to what you'd actually see if you were standing there looking at it, because your eye automatically adjusts to light and shadows whereas a camera will normally just take one measure of light in.
I guess the easy way to explain it is that it enhances the dark areas, and supresses the super bright areas so everything is more even and the details really come out. It gives it kind of a surreal effect.
I took 3 photos on a jerry rigged tripod, -2, 0, and +2. I had to adjust the AEB manually between shots so it took me roughly a minute to shoot all the pictures needed for each pose. All I have is a super cheap HP photofart point&shoot but I'm trying to make due till I get the hang of the process. Its not hard to do as long as you have the 3 shots. I used a program called Photomatix to generate the HDR and adjust the tone mapping.
