Figured I'd move my build thread here.
This is my budget daily driver for now while I'm building my 86.5 Nissan hardbody.
Specs
1991 Mercury Capri XR2
103k Original miles.
I have alot in store for this car, So keep an eye on this thread.
Right now the car is torn down while I work on the piping route, the front mount intercooler is rock solid and ready to go, waiting on some reducers and other parts to get more done.
Pictures are in order from when I got it, to how it sits now. ENJOY!

Intercooler mounting in next post!
;)

Here are some pictures of the mounting of my FMIC
Rock solid and ready to be hooked up! :D
Also I'll be doing a custom 2.5 downpipe since I removed my AC with 2.5 pipe all the way back. Sending my ecu out to rocketman, and adding a boost controller. Also have some other things planned but you'll see them in due time.
Enough talking, here are the pictures.

My manifold also has the infamous crack, so i'm looking into having a custom one made.
Stay tuned for more updates soon!

What turbo are you going to use?
-
Stock for awhile, not looking to drop serious time or work into this car right now, my hardbody is my main focus.
-
Looking good man...
-
Pretty Sweet!
-
Small update.
Got my intercooler to throttle body piping done, as well as the bov pipe. Gotta order some reducers for the other pipes. Some more updates soon!

looking good, you might want to come up with a parts list for those that want to follow you....
LIKE ME....
-
And me...........
-
we will expect a step by step when its done..LOL
-
I'll be able to help people out, but a step by step just wouldn't really be worth while. I'm kind of winging it as I go hah
More updates soon.
-
all i need is where you got the pipes..i can do the rest... (http://graemlins/big-cool.gif)
-
Same here..........!!
-
I just ordered an intercooler kit from e-bay. (http://smile.gif)
-
Is that 2.5" aluminum piping?
-
Yeah, it is.
-
so you got one of those that had the intercooler and misc pipes that came with it.
or did you buy one of the piping kits that has a bunch of pipes in it

-
sweet, how is the build on the intercooler, does it look like it will hold up to boost?
-
It is very well built. I have no complaints. :D
-
need a video when you are done, are you putting back on the stock turbo?
-
Waiting on some more goodies to show up, So I got most of the piping figured out, and since they screwed up my bov order and sent a gold one, I painted it trans blue and polished my vaf. Figured a pic would tide you guys over.
-
you got me wanting to get one now... i was worried about those cheap ebay kits but i guess they can make them a lot better now then 8 years ago when i was in the states.
-
I've been running a 'cheap' ebay intercooler for almost a year now. Its held up awesome, works great! The build quality is pretty nice too, it didnt strike me as cheap
-
what kind of intercooler is that ?
-
I already said, its an e-bay special.
Lots more polishing on the vaf while I wait for more parts.
-
Little mock up picture. Excuse how shitty the engine bay looks right now. (http://graemlins/big-down.gif)
-
why bring the airfilter so far up?'
-
I'm going to eventually run a ram air style intake setup, scoop or something of the sort.
Might change the mounting for right now, depends.
-
scoop makes sense
-
Pulled the motor today to paint the engine bay, and clean up the motor, fix some stuff, tuck the wiring, and ect.
Stay tuned.
BTW: these motors are cake to pull!
-
omg you have cake? and your not sharing!!!! j/k ya they are small little packages.
-
i was wondering if anyone has used one of these intercoolers yet, it has the inlet and outlet on the same side. i was thinking it might be easier to run it with the factory set up by just replacing the factory pipes instead of running them in a whole new direction

You can use anything, its all in what your comfortable customizing. I don't really think those would make things any easier though hah
-
what is the measurements of your?
have you fitted the bumper yet?
did you have to do a lot of cutting?
-
27x7x2.5
My bumper fits with no cutting, All I had to do was cut holes in the core support to run the 90's through. Hole saw made short work of that. Running the piping was also much easier then I thought.
Update very soon.
-
could you keep the A/C the way you ran the pipes or was removing all the A/C crap needed to make them fit?
i am still debating if i will keep my A/C or not. it gets 120deg here for about 2 months and over 100 for at least 5. not sure if i can keep the top down always.
-
You prob could, My one hose was blown, and I never use AC, let alone in a vert. But I guess you could keep it.
-
i am only thinking about keeping it for those rare rainy days that its still 100 here but wet..they are few and far between...i will probly remove it all..MORE POWER
-
I'll have some updates for you guys very soon.
-
hey, what extra pipes did you get?
where did you get the couplings to attach to the turbo? those are so tiny. i started taking off all my crap today to prep for mine. do you have to keep the front bumper support off or did you just remove it to make it easier to work?
-
I didn't need any extra piping. Actually I still have 3 full pipes left over. I ordered my reducers from http://www.siliconeintakes.com/ (http://www.siliconeintakes.com/)
I used
1 1.75-2.5 straight reducer
1 1.75-2.5 90 bend reducer
1 2.5-3.0 90 bend reducer, which was a tad too small, I guess the maf inlet and outlet is 3.5 and not 3.0, but my 3.0 fit with a little help hah
Do you mean the middle metal core support thing? I didn't remove anything other then the middle metal piece that unbolts from the core support.
Good luck!
-
got my intercooler today,
have you fitted your radiator yet?
i put the 90deg pipe like you did and it is super close to the fan.
for the part coming off the turbo, you cut that pipe down to just use the angle part?
did you also buy the BOV pipe from that website?
i ordered my 1.75 hoses from there. i see thaey have a greddy pipe there i am thinking about getting it now as well
-
I got my BOV pipe on e-bay.
I have no issues with rad clearance. I used the 90 1.75-2.5 reducer, then a 45 tube with the long end cut down, meeting a cut down 90 tube, into the silicone 90 coupler on the intercooler. You can run it a bunch of different ways, just double measure and fit before you cut.
-
i tried to find a greddy type rs pipe and could not find one...
-
Ah, so much left to do.
Got some stuff done, and some stuff ordered, don't want to update with pics till I'm done with some more stuff. (http://graemlins/devil.gif)
-
what does the BOV sound like does it sound good ?
-
Haven't got to run it yet with the new bov, still have to get my ecu done, and some wiring, almost there I will post videos when its done.
Updates soon, I promise.
-
promises promises
-
Hey, takes time when money is tight.
Too bad money doesn't grow on trees.
-
you telling me..
-
Finally got back to work, Got my motor back together somewhat, got a couple more things to do.
Pics tomorrow!
-
Phwoa... Shiney rocker covers! The work looks amazing! Can't wait for another update
-
Ok, so here's the deal.
I bought the other 91 capri so I could invest more planning on the project capri. And I've come to a point where I'm not sure where to go with it.
I could either swap my FMIC setup to my dd keep the motor trans and ect for spares for it and keep it slightly modded
Then I could be open to a number of motor swaps into the project capri
Thoughts I had are
2.0 zetec turbo or supercharged
Small block v8 either LT1 or a 302 either or turbo or supercharged
Or possible other canidates.
So what would you guys like to see?
I could always do the 1.6 as well, but I want this capri to be different.
Throw out your opinions!
-
well we already have v8 capris :) lol what about a small v6 ? leaves more room than a v8 for twin turbo ?
-
I've only seen the drag capri.
I am leaning towards the 2.0 don't think anyone has done one yet hah
-
well the capri before ours was a 5.0 2.0L soulds like it would be a good job
-
SR20DET.....
They made it so it can be set up to a FWD, AWD or RWD...
So many options
Long term for me is to get a 94 and play with it with this....
But the DSM has to be looking pretty before i can do it...so it will be a while
-
Small V6 will be taken care of in short order, and not in the way you'd expect either (http://smile.gif)
-
Why, Rocket - whatever do you mean??
-
i know about this one :-D talked about it at the necg
