It CAN'T be that hard to DIY rebuild an early production alternator, can it? If someone can send me a link to a rebuild kit, I'll volunteer to take mine apart and figure it out. I'm pretty sure it's got an internal short, anyway.

It isn't. I used to do it all time to American made units. I even made custom drivers to install the bearings. The problem would be parts availability. Check that out first before tearing into it.

I've had a modern alternator apart. (off my 04 hyundai elantra, was f'd anyway) Was near impossible to re-assemble, broke the brushes trying to get it back together. There must be a special tool for it.

I dunno how much of a good example a malaise-era Hyundai is....early 2000's Korean cars are quite interesting from an engineering standpoint. But, if we do something like this: https://www.ebay.com/b/Alternator-Generator-Parts-for-1991-Mercury-Capri/177698/bn_93887386 I'm seeing bearings, rectifiers, pigtails, and brush holders. I think that's everything I'd need to rebuild it, other than a parts washer and some tools. I might have to give it a go

Sad news - I installed a new alternator but the whining noise did not get resolved. I am now thinking this is a water pump issue (fml). Hopefully I can get that changed out but this job makes me nervous due to the complexity (timing belt replacement, engine coolant flush, etc) and I don't think I have the proper tools such as a floor jack for hoisting up the engine.. this is the worst possible timing for me because the weather is starting to turn cold, so I can barely get a day where it's not raining. I'll be searching for parts that I need to do this work but I am a bit overwhelmed so if anyone has a list of parts and would be willing to post them here I would really appreciate it - the list I got before with belt numbers was so helpful and I can't thank you guys enough for providing that. Cheers!

It's not a super difficult job by any means. I'd probably read up on it in the service manual, and make sure to have any gaskets on-hand for anything you have to remove. I did my belt with the engine out, so I'm not entirely sure what all you'll need to pull to do it in the car. The motor mount obviously, as with all the accessory drive stuff. Now would be the time to have replacement serpentine belts on hand, if yours look rough. Have some rust penetrant and anti-seize for the tensioners. I don't know if the intake manifold, exhaust manifold, or valve cover (or intake piping, etc.) have to come off; just read the FSM before you order parts. I used the gates kit on my car (unsure if it's the same part number on the turbo cars, but its the same idea), and it was not bad at all. As far as timing belt jobs go, it's pretty easy. Should be doable in a two-day weekend without much stress.

Since you are there, the oil pump isn't that costly and get the radiator hose which will be difficult. I think I've heard you can trim a 323 hose to fit, haven't tried it though.
