B6T troubles
« on: September 09, 2010, 05:10:00 AM »

Okay so after 9 passes at the strip last night my ~155,000 mile B6T is having some pretty decently big issues. Its now pretty obviously running on 3 cyls (I think its #2 thats down). The turbo spools REALLY slow. And its going through oil like crazy. Oil everywhere. Its also burning it. Any amount of boost results in a huge plume of oil smoke blowing out of the back of the car for a half mile. Other than that the engine actually feels smooth while driving. Idle sucks but at cruise it just feels down on power. Sounds like 3 cyls though.

I'm officially declaring it out of daily driver status. I'd like to check compression and all that stuff sometime but I have a feeling its needing a rebuild or something. It doesnt really knock or tick bad or anything like that but it is up there on miles.

So before I dive into it does anyone have any real ideas what could be wrong? Its all basically stock besides a rocketchip ECU and ~16-18 psi.

Does anyone think I should just look into a rebuild? Cause I'm thinking I'm looking at at least a top end rebuild...

Beginning of winter. Not your only driver. 155,000 & you like too run it sounds like. I'd do it in a heartbeat. I've got over 166,000 & really tried for a donor just too take my time to rebuild the engine since mine is a daily. Just think of starting out with Zero miles & you may find your answer. Comp. is about 100 across on mine but it'll get through the winter fine. Good luck,  Rob

Brad,

go for the compression test. That'll tell us a lot.

Honestly to me, it sounds like a burned piston. Could very well be a valve though.

Usually its not the topend that goes on these, the pistons like to melt. I've overboosted once and melted 3 at once. 18psi is a little high, are you getting crazy boost spikes?

Not really, but my autometer boost gauge is trash, I had to basically guess what boost I was running. It reads 3-4 psi engine off so I was guessing when it said around 20 psi that I was actually in the 16-18 range.

Ah well, build it stronger I guess. Some forged pistons would be nice. Or maybe just swap to a BPT?

Any good budget rebuild guides for the B6T? I know I'm jumping to conclusions here but I'd like to know what I'd be looking at.

Definetly a melted piston or two. My son did the same thing to his B6T. When he brought it home that night puking smoke out all holes I asked him if he won..he said yeah Dad..it was a Honda too ....looks like a full rebuild or find a good used motor

Update...

Did compression test, 155-100-160-100

So 2 and 4 are down pretty good.

What does that tell me?

Cant say "put some oil in the cyls and try again" cause the cyls are already well saturated with oil.

The main problems is its running on 3 or 3.5 cyls and any ANY amount of boost results in huge plumes of oil smoke for a mile or so. Theres also oil on every square inch of the engine bay, I think its coming out of my BOV mainly.

Plugs are all fouled out, no point in trying new because they will also be quickly fouled by the masses of oil I'm losing.

Oh yeah, theres a good bit of noise coming from the top end. Very audible.

Soooo... quick google search finds a set of forged Wiseco 9:1 pistons for... like $530.

I think I would be better off just refreshing a NA or Xr2 longblock and dropping it in. Im not looking to set records here, I'd just like a nice quick but fuel efficient car I can daily drive. I had that. 102.7 in the 1/4 mile and 35-40 mpg is impressive. It was just worn out and I let things get a bit out of hand. I also have some rigjobs that contributed to its death, like my stock xr2 intercooler mounted in a horrible place. I was trying to get too much out of the vj14 as well.

So at this point Im thinking an Xr2 or NA longblock with new gaskets/seals and preferably lower miles, and then a 14/11 hybrid, or maybe 11/tbird hybrid, a decent intercooler setup, 2.5" downpipe. Maybe some porting... a header would be nice. Can the stock exhaust manifold be ported at all? I know the 2.3 manifolds can have tons of metal taken out of them.
