my newest go fast project part 2 (see part 1 first)
« on: September 22, 2009, 12:42:00 PM »

ok i believe i left off with....

from here i made the cover for the first half of the airbox tunnel (pictured in part 1) and with it siliconed in place.. i moved to the other side of the headlight "wall" to where the actual filter from my already made intake will sit..

from here ....

to here.... where i spent at least another hour fabricating this...

i kinda regret putting the headlight bucket back in so fast. cuase i forgot to take a good picture of both pieces in place before i did..

after getting the second "rear" box in place i fitted it all together with my already there intake and HKS Mushroom filter...

and with everything installed back and the bumper put back on it looks like this...

just a silver hole where my air is pulled in, and where it is rammed in at speed....

i took it for a couple rides, at both high and low speed, and lemme tell you..
THIS MOD HELPS ALOT... my butt dyno is screaming at least a ten HP gain, yes its noticibly faster at slow and fast speeds and the inside of that upper box stays cold to the touch ... another cool thing is if you rev the engine with your hand covering the foglight hole you can feel the air getting sucked in past your fingers ... its really cool, and there gonna hate me downtown this weekend since the car will be that much faster on the highway....

so whatcha think yall??? am i a nut or what...
it is just so simple (well not really it took me 6 hours to do all this, and wait for the silicone to harden....) but its extremely effective ... but alas this is another one not for the faint of heart or one with no sheetmetal bending skills , or one who dosent want to dice up there capri ...but mines a dedicated racer and i dont mind..    :D    yall be good and tell me what you think...Joe...RCICustoms...

Hey RCI! My experience with front spoiler mounted air intake is not good. I had them twin intakes on a car years ago and my brother put a system on his car afterwards. I warned him as to why mine got removed but he had to find out for himself. We kept getting water in our intakes. With the Capris having turbos, I'm sure the problem will be worse. Keep us informed.  Gus

kinda close to what i will be making myself. to solve the water problem i was going to add those couplers that allow the water to escape.

or

i was thinking of making a box where the battery is and making a scoop to ram air into the box from over the hood. i seen a maita set up like that, it forced air in the bay like that.

take a closer look guys..... the standard cold air is in place just like before HKS MUSHROOM FILTER and all...

it looks like this without the lid on the airbox...

and notice the half inch holes in the bottom of the fender well, where the stock airbox and battery tiedown once mounted ...yes there still there... and the filter sits about 6 inches above the bottom of the box... so water coming in will actually be less than having the filter above the tranny cause the splashes wont get on the filter cause now its protected from splashes by the box.....

believe it or not ive built theese before yall.....

Lemme get this straight...
You built a cold air induction kit FROM SCRATCH?!
And with minimal modification to the body?
Market that kit STAT!

EDIT:
After checking out Part 1 there is quite alot of work involved and it wouldn't be a straight out of the box bolt on kit. Still a really awesome setup. Induction noise would get you some attention

oh yea, and not so much the noise from the intake but the reverb from the BOV sounds wicked , it kinda has a hollow echo...as for a kit this is a from scratch prototype.. but russ (capri type r) has already called the first production unit or "kit" i make using mine as a template.... as for one i make it would come with rivets for construction, and directions on how to relocate stuff to fit it together ... aggain, russ and i are already having discussions so ill keep yall posted... Joe...

this is not a "patented" idea, or will it ever be.... its just how i solved a problem... feel free to make one.. but im gonna tell ya, this is not as easy as it looks.. and you will cut yourself with the sheetmetal...i did in 4 places and this took me about 6 hours with the proper tools and supplies on hand...
im going to try to put together pre made kits, that you just rivet together and silicone it in place, cut the front hole and make the piping if you wish...

truthfully you dont have to run a pipe to a foglight hole if you dont want.. if you would rather you could just "swiss cheese" the front panel where my pipe comes out and you would get plenty of cold air from under the bumper..through the "tunnel" and in your filter ..i was just going for the ram air effect with mine.. but it would signifigantly drop intake temps just pulling from under the bumper cover...
gimme some time to R&D the design further, and im sure russ will be my distributor on theese when it makes it to "kit" form....

i made the idea in my head and the prototype yesterday guys... gimme some time im gonna hook it up...

He's still perfecting these! As soon as they are ready, either he or I will post it!!

you can bring it straight up under the filter in that same location, i already been tweakin with it on my parts car, it would eliminate having to box under the headlamp. same result just a bit different. i hope to get it done soon enough, too many honey do list
