Low Compression/Head Gasket/Brakes
« on: August 18, 2010, 02:02:00 AM »

I picked up a 1991 Capri XR2 with "low compression" for FREE.  I want to get it running, then make it reliable.

What head gasket should I get?  Is an MLS available for durability?

Also, I want big brakes for some potential track duty.  What fits?

Thanks in advance.

Nice score!

MLS gaskets are available, but I've found the stock to hold up sufficiently. Check out a Cometic gasket for 1.6L miata same gasket. ARP head studs also available.

I just put up a sticky thread on the Galant big brake upgrade - it's not a bolt-on kit, but gives larger / thicker rotors & larger calipers, very hard to get to fade. In the suspension section here http://teamcapri.com/capri-gi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=17;t=000087

Thanks for the info.  What kind of power will the xr2 make with just the rocket chip, 12-14psi, better intake, and sawed off exhaust?

I'm currently driving a "stock-ish" turbo car with just a RocketChip, MBC, and a larger exhaust. The gains are noticeable, but nothing huge. More than worthwhile to do, though. Great stepping stone to more mods!

By the way, Welcome to TeamCapri, and great score on the free XR2!!  If you need parts, let me know, I have 12 parts cars!

Compared to stock the gains are huge!

12-14 psi will net you 140+ whp. (with that setup)

Be careful with a cutoff exhaust. Quite likely to see major boost creep, the stock turbo and wastegate are pretty sensitive to backpressure (or lack thereof)
