Alternator change!
« on: March 04, 2003, 01:05:00 PM »

I am in the middle of a crisis with my car and I was hoping that you could help me.  I own a 1991 capri and am trying to replace the alternator.  What i thought would be a half hour task ended up being a 2 hour nightmare.  After removing the catalitic converter, loosing exhaust bolts, and taking apart the starter i still can not remove the old alternator!
I know there are not chiltons books on these cars and ive searched the internet but i can not find anything.  Your help is much appreciated!

First, thanks alot for your support i really appreciate it.  I am still shocked at how hard it is to get to the alternator compared to other cars.  I will get back at you tomorrow after i try again!  thanks so much, and thanks for the tech link.

Just think of it this way,in a couple of months when the new alternator goes you will be able to do it in half the time.Do yourself a favor remove the exhaust shielding while the pipe is out-trust me.

I can do it in under 10 minutes if my dolley is out and my tools ready! because of my custom exhaust I just unbolt the mid-pipe from the downpipe and push it BAAAAACK on the urathane exhaust hangers... leaves me just enough room to get the alt out!

(I have replaced 4 now and still am having electrical woes!)

Good god, is the alternator going a well know problem with the Capri? Is it being burned out by the heat of the exhaust line and cataleptic converter right there, or is it being over worked by the stereo systems that some of you guys must have?

Some capris have bad alternators. I had a 1200 watt single sub system in my car and the alternator was fine all the time. Others will say otherwise, i heard that depending on where the capri made and where it was made the alternators are different models of the same amp and pully type. Might be documented TSB info, just check in the recalls/tsb report section here and you can find out your self.

I’ll look into that a little more, thanks for the idea of where to look. Since I don’t see any problem with my alternator right now, I’m assuming it’ll be fine for now. Al least if I start to have a charging problem I know where to start to look.

Ya, TSB reports are a good start and since the site also now has Ford Offical TSB you have a better source.

Be careful not to brake any bolts! Those adjusting bolts are going it to brake if you will not free any nuts that hold them in place..

On my capri the alternator looks brand new..

BTW, don't remove heatshields, just replace them with new sheetmetal, they help your car to get some HP!

Alas, the day has come and I made the dreaded call to AAA.  I'm tired of messing with this car and i just had them tow the shit.  Hopefully the garage will have it fixed this week.  I gave my uncle(my mechanic) the info you guys gave me, so it should be alright.

oh and btw, i didnt have any high end audio installation hooked up, it just died on its own while driving down the road one day.  hopefully when i get it back i can hookup my 12's tho

Well good luck and keep us informed. Do what it takes within reason to keep the capri on the road.
