camshaft baffle
« on: July 27, 2011, 02:43:00 PM »

I'm replacing my timing belt and I'm having trouble getting to the belt on the camshaft side. It seems the baffle is still in place and the manual is very vague. "remove camshaft baffle" How do i get the baffle off of the camshaft and what tools do I need to have.

I have no idea what "baffle" you are referring to. Do you have a picture of it? There should not be anything preventing the belt being installed

How do I upload a picture? It's the disc thats the last thing before the oil pan and cam shaft.

You have to remove the 21mm main bolt to get that off, then tap it with whatever you feel like.  Pretty sure it's steel, I just stuck a junk screwdriver in there and it popped off pretty easily.

What do you use to hold the Crankshaft with? Mine turns very freely.

Automatic or Manual?  Mine is a turbo car I just held it still by putting it in gear, if your car is in park it shouldn't move the engine though.

If it's in the ground in park, you shouldn't be able to turn it, unless I don't quite get how the parking pawl stops the car.

Its on a Jackstand in park and in drive. I had to take off the right front tire to get to it. Should I put it on the ground? would that make a difference?

It will not. The parking pawl locks the transmsion, but the torque converter is free to spin.

You will need to lock the engine via the flywheel or use an inpact wrench.

There is a Ford Special Service tool for it, I'm not sure if it will work with the transmission attached to the engine though.

One trick that I commonly use: (but have to be very careful with)
-Disconnect ignition coil lead from dizzy
-Put wrench & socket on crank bolt, with pipe over the end of the wrench, resting against the bottom of the car
-Turn the key to START quickly - don't hold it, to momentarily engage the starter ("whack" the starter"}
--This will loosen the bolt on the crank using the starter. Will not work in reverse to tighten it.
**Use this method at your own risk.**

The Miata guys had a tool that bolted to the accessory pulleys with those 4 10mm bolts - you might need to come up with something that will fit there to keep the engine from rotating. It's tough with the automatic.

Thanks for the information I'm going to try that today. Another question, after I get it off and all back together how do I tighten the 21mm bolt?

You could try a piece of rope packed into the spark plug hole.
