transmision swap?
« on: May 19, 2009, 04:08:00 PM »

I just bought a 92 capri, (non turbo), I am wondering if any one knows if a Mazda 323 (late 80's model) 5 speed transmission will bolt up to my capri? I kep hearing about people who swap out the motors, will the tranny interchange?
thanks for looking.

I think eveything will bolt up, but the F-series is hydraulic, I think the 80's 323 F series were all cable actuated.

I've heard that the 88-89 Mazda 323 GT engine and transmission will bolt right up to the N/A capris.

323 GT is also cable actuated (identical to an XR2 tranny). You could use it with an XR2 pedal assembly. Its the stronger transmission, the axles are different, however the N/A axles *may* work providing the splinecount is correct. The pass axle might not clip into the diff which could be a problem, as the GT and XR2 use a jackshaft on that side instead of a full length axle. It could clip in no problem I'm not sure.

I know the clutch is different though, the disk is larger but I dont know if the input shaft and splinecount are the same

when i bought my capri, someone had used a na clutch on my xr2.(didnt hold crap above stock boost) and yes the spline count for the tranny input shaft is the same. but the sprung center section on the clutch disc(inside the friction surface area) is bigger and a turbo disc will not fit in a na pressure plate... ive got a centerforce 2 PP and a ACT double sprung disc and i cant get it to slip. it just eats tires..
i love it ...hehe
