Title: A/C one speed
Post by: greywolf27030 on March 13, 2021, 09:18:10 AM
My A/C only works on fan speed 2. Anyone have any experience with this. Can the heater control be repaired or does it require replacement?

I'm not positive on the Capri, but on a normal car I'd say there's a 99% chance your blower motor resistor is going bad/has gone bad. I've not played with the AC system on my car yet, so I'm unsure of how it is set up. Under the glove box, there should be the blower motor. Or at least, it should be in that general area. It'll look like a giant hamster wheel, or a squirrel cage. Usually, there's a resistor attached to it which allows the driver to select the fan speed, by changing the voltage flowing to the fan motor. Look for electrical connectors going into the fan, you should be able to find it. They're usually cheap and easy to replace.

I could be way off base, maybe these cars are different. That's where I'd start if I were you, though.

You are absolutely correct. There isn't one available for Capri, but they are listed for an '88 323, hopefully it will be the correct one as the fan motor is the same as used for the Tracer. It will be here in a few days, I'll let you know.

Yes, the blower motor resistors are a common issue on the Capri. I *think* the one for the 323 works, I ordered a correct one when I worked at an autoparts store circa 2012 but I can't recall what make/model it was from

I got one for an '88 323, but haven't had time to try it yet.

323 is the correct resister, but didn't correct the problem, still on A/C. What next?

Do you have a multimeter? Test for the amount of voltage going into the blower motor, at the motor itself. Cycle it through all the fan speed options. If you are seeing the same voltage reading at every option, something is going on with either the switch or the resistor. If the amount of voltage is switching, but the amount of air coming out of the vents stays the same amount, then there's something going on with your fan. If you can find a wiring diagram of the circuit, I can show you where to probe.

Air speed changes with the fan switch. No A/C on any speed.

Ohhhhhh I see, it isn't blowing cold. Have you pressure tested the system? It may have spring a leak and lost all of the refrigerant. Usually at parts stores you can find cans of freon that come with cheap, simple AC gauges. Unfortunately, I've only ever seen them for R-134a refrigerant. I'm pretty sure the Capri uses R12. You'll probably need to track down a set of gauges specifically for an R12 system. If it's empty, good luck finding someplace that can refill it. You'll probably be better off converting to R-134. Also, if it did leak out, you'll need to find and repair the leak. The easiest way to do that is to inject a UV dye into the system, then check all the components with a black light and yellow glasses. I've seen it leak everywhere from the lines, to the fittings, the condenser, etc. etc. You'll have to check everything.

Oh, another thing you can check. Make sure that the clutch on your AC compressor is properly engaging and disengaging. Just have someone sit in the car and toggle the AC on and off while you watch the front of the compressor.

It's been converted to R13A and the compressor isn't cutting in when the switch is operated.

Check if you are getting voltage to the compressor. If you are, it'll need a compressor. If you aren't, it's a wiring issue that you'll have to trace. Start with the fuse, and work from there.

Edit:
------
I'm getting rid of my AC, in fact. If your compressor is the culprit, you can have mine (just gotta pay shipping). I can't promise you it works, seeing as I've never had the car running. I can try to test it if you'd be interested in it.

I don't have time to work on it right now, but will get back to it later. If the clutch works it might be good to have.
