Timing, from start to finish
« on: March 30, 2011, 01:24:00 PM »

I have replaced the head and timing belt in my 92 xr2, cams were removed and placed in the new head.

I am looking for a step by step timing guide. Pretty much looking for where to set what and in which order, i have a timing light and can see all my timing marks clearly (Thanks to a yellow paint marker).

1 is at TDC

I've searched the site and can't find what i am looking for.

Thanks in advance!, Tim

First: Buy a FSM. It'll be one of the best investments toward your capri that you will ever make.

Now, timing procedure:

The crankshaft timing cog has a vee cut into it. Lining this up with the mark on the oil pump puts the engine at TDC.

Line both the cam gears up. There are two marks on each cam gear. Each mark is labeled, either I or E. Use the I mark on the intake cam, and the E mark on the exhaust cam. The marks line up with marks on the timing cover backing plate, which put the marks basically pointing straight up.

The tensioner should already be loose, so you should be able to put the belt on.

Once the belt is installed, ensure that all timing marks are where they are supposed to be and didn't move when putting the belt on.

If everything is good - rotate the engine twice via the crank bolt. Line the timing cogs back to their marks, and ensure all the marks are still lined up.

If so, tighten the tensioner, torque the crank bolt, and put everything back together. You're good to go.

Here's a guide for the 1.8 miata, its close but not exact. You dont need the special tools there, you can put the car into gear to lock the drivetrain up. (won't work if you have an auto)

Also, if you could do me a favor, scale your signature down a bit so it's not pushing the constraints of the forum. (~600px wide) Thanks!

Factory Service Manual. The kind the dealership has. There is no chiltons/haynes manuals for our car.

They pop on eBay fairly frequently.
