Ok, so i was driving along.... everything was just fine.... and bam...

engine dies... tach reads 0, no engine response whatsoever....

i manage to get my hazard lights on and pull over to the side of the road (at this point all electronics were still working 100%, radio, lights at full brightness, etc)

So i'm at the side of the road and I try to restart the car, and..... nothing. As soon as I turned the key, all power went out, and stayed out.

I got a tow back to my place... in my sleep deprived state the only thing I could notice is a little chunk of teeth missing from the alternator belt... so i'm like WTF....

HELP

Alternator and battery are only 6 months old and the car was running nearly perfect for weeks.

my caddy and capri did the same thing, all i needed to do was clean the battery terminals on the battery and inside the terminals.

i took a small file and went away. has been working perfect for months.

both my cars did it within about 1 month of each other. it was just like you said.

If they think its trashed then I would take the car somewhere else. Sounds like a bunch of jap-hating chevy guys to me. Like they think any OHC engine that loses the timing belt is trashed.

Pretty easy to tell if the timing belts trashed. #1 take the belt cover off and see if the cams turn with the crank. #2 does the engine crank a LOT faster than normal?

confirmed the timing belt was trashed... however i will excuse their thinking that the b engine was interference... the main mechanic had a project 323 with a friend... he claims that that engine had a modified head, etc, which unfortunately turned it into interference. He soon realized his errors and apologized.

what im trying to figure out is that if the timing belt snapped.... how did that muck up the electricity and drain the battery

maybe it was slipping enough to not spin fast enough?

so did you find it broken?

i want to change mine soon. i am trying to decide on doing it myself or pay someone. i never did one before but i think it is time to learn and save 250 in labor

Hey Gost! Are you talking about two different things? I hope so because when timing belts slip, your drive time is over. Thankfully our cars don't crash the vales unless you have shaved the excessively or a high lift set of cams. Gus

ok, battery terminals replaced, snapped timing belt replaced... seals that were leaking onto my timing belt that caused to to snap... replaced... alternator belt with small chunks missing... replaced

now.... there's a weird whirring sound...
coming from under timing belt cover... not very noticeable at idle... but gets loud enough to heat at 2k while driving... any ideas?

Give it some time it may need to break in, I noticed something similar when I installed a new belt on my old 1.6

Same here!  I had the same noise after putting a new belt in my old N/A.  It went away after about 2 weeks!
