Power windows
« on: September 13, 2011, 02:10:00 PM »

Windows stopped working. I cleaned the switches as instructed by 'Rocketman'. After cleaning, only passenger windows thru master switch, worked. Does anyone have any idea?  Driver's window is in lowered position. I rather the driver's window be in up position, so, if I can't the switch to work, I will remove panel and manually lift window.  thanks for reading.

Sounds like the switch is working as it should. Try jumping power to the motor on the driverside directly through the plug in the door.

If it does not work then the regulator is probably shot. There's a member on the Yahoo! & Facebook groups named James Whitt - he rebuilds them.

If it does work with direct power, the switch might need replaced

HTML markup doesn't work here.

FYI, I did a how-to many years ago: http://www.werbatfik.com/switches/

A couple of days ago I picked up a pw motor and regulator off a 98 escort.  I fit the cables to the capri regulator.  Knocked out the mounting screws on the motor and zip tied it into place.  reassembled the window.  seems to be working well.  even the electrical connection and wire colors are the same!

Awesome, good to know! I've suspected that some of the BG chassis (protege, escort) stuff would be real close.

Now knowing that the Escort/Tracer/Protégé power window motor works (and the cables can be fitted to our regulator "mast/lifter"), if I had the project to do again, here's what I would do differently:
1.  Buy a new motor as opposed to one out of a salvage yard.  The new ones are pretty cheap online, so why not?  I just didn't want to spend an extra $20 when I wasn't certain the thing would fit.
2.  I MIGHT consider carving out a small section on the interior door frame to allow a little more room for the motor to sit.  I don't think doing so would compromise the structural integrity of the interior door frame and it would give another 1/4 to 1/2 inch of clearance room for the motor.  By so doing, you may be able to devise a way to hold the motor in place with the mounting bolts or rivets as opposed to my zip tie approach.

Again - all in hindsight.  The take-away for me is that if I have to do this again on the other door, I will not hesitate to use the $35 Escort motor retrofit vs the alternatives available online.

Down side is that this mod means I can't participate in the "stock" autocross class.  :D

HAH.

Im pretty sure those cars had a manual option too, might be neat to convert to manual windows for the sake of "weight savings" and "reliability" :D

Any thoughts on wether the escort regulator could be made to work in the capri?  My car is missing the entire drivers side assembly, and I'm having a heck of a time finding a replacement, in any condition.  Looking at pics online, they look somewhat close in length and curvature etc.  might have to get one and see if it can be modded to fit.

Ebay has new regulator with motor and cables for $45 shipped.

I had some luck with retrofitting an escort gt window motor to out regulator (mast and assembly).  I have also messed around with the Kia Spectra and Sephia window motor and regulator.  Although you have to trim these to fit, the motor and cable spool unit is almost identical to ours and much better performance (faster up and down).  If you want to do a standard capri unit, check over on the Yahoo site - there are often a handful of motor / regulator assembly units available.  Also, James Whitt (search him on Yahoo) rebuilds the motor and assembly units.

Probably more info than you were looking for!

Before its all said and done, I am going to acquire a spare door, cut away the exterior sheeting and monkey with mechanical "scissor" units until i find something that works.

Interesting!  Just looked at the Kia assembly.  Looks close to what we have.  For $50 I might order one and see if it can be made to fit.

Thanks for the info!
