stock downpipe?
« on: July 14, 2010, 07:12:00 AM »

Will the stock downpipe work for a vj-11? Do I need turbo gaskets for a 11 or a 14,or are they the same? I will be buying the vj 11 in the next day or so if this is as easy as it seams. Thanks Rocky.

KEEP the stock turbine housing and use the VJ11 CHRA. This way you can retain the stock cast dump pipe and your downpipe. The CHRA is held in with 4 bolts and retainer washers, the bearing housings will swap between the two turbos. This will keep your spool time to a minimum.

Even if the turbo is not rebuildable, generally only the center sections with the bearing (CHRA) goes bad, the turbine housing would still be usable and you could put the VJ11 CHRA into the VJ14 and have the 14/11 hybrid.

or,..lol
if you have a good center (either vj11 or 14 ) and the coldside housing and wheel are good on the existing vj11, you can build a 11/14 hybrid... you want the small hotside with the big coldside..
the exhaust wheels are the same size..
but on the coldside you need to keep the corresponding wheel with the corresponding housing...

when i did mine (way back in the day) i didnt even take the turbo out, i used the vj 11 coldside wheel and housing, and just bolted them to my exhisting 14 center. while it was still bolted to the manifold. you can hold the hotside wheel with a socket while taking the 8mm nut off the end of the shaft to swap wheels...

Thanks both of you. So let me summerize. I may be able to hybrid the used VJ11 with my VJ 14 WITHOUT sending it out for a rebuild. Is that true? If I dont need balancing I have a guy who can probably do it locally. What about enlarging the waste gate or whatever? How big and how to? I have my eye on a good used VJ 11 on ebay for about 175 shipped. What do you think? Thanks a lot. I am sure I, and my mechanic will have more questions. Hey,how high can you boost a hybrid-once I get a good aftermarket gauge?Rocky

on the hybrid turbo i would still run only 16 psi of boost because that is what the rocketchip is set the fuel maps at to keep the car safe.

the wastegate is very easy to open up when theturbo is taken apart. what i did was cover wastegate flapper with paint then close and just use a dremel tool to open up the hole. just make sure the wastegate can still close.

if you can find yourself a vj-20 downpipe i would get that. i use a vj-20 downpipe. its alot more opened up and will increase flow and spool time. you will need to get a new downpipe flange for the exhaust but will worth it. also comes with a pre-existing 02 bung for a wideband 02 sensor.

Thanks Joshua. I have a dremel tool,I guess that sounds better than paying someone 80 bucks an hour to do it.Rocky

exactly!! its very easy just go slow and constantly keep checking to make sure the hole is still completely covered. making the wastegate bigger will make a HUGE difference on keeping a handle on boost spike and boost creep.

Thanks again Joshua. So do you think with a good used vj11 and my blown vj14 I can put together a hybrid with out sending it out for a 300 to 550 buck rebuild? I mean this is gonna cost me pretty heavy coin as it is!Rocky

i would have to think it would need to be rebuilt because the way that i did mine was you take the exhaust housing off the turbo then you see the exhaust turbine and the compressor turbine. there is a small reverse thread bolt ... (TURN BOLT TO THE RIGHT TO LOOSEN ) i made that mistake first. then the compressor wheel will pull off. put the vj-11 compressor wheel onto the shaft and retighten bolt. then install the exhaust housing back onto the turbo. then put the new vj-11 compressor housing onto the turbo. so your keeping the same vj-14 exhaust turbine and the vj-14 bearing setup so you will need to get that rebuilt.

this setup like that will keep the smaller exhaust wheel which will spool the bigger vj-11 compressor wheel so you get the same spool time with the slightly more air pushed with the vj-11 compressor.

i dont know if there is a different way to make a turbo all i know is that this was the way i did mine and it made a big difference to my cars performance.

my turbo was in perfect condition with no shaft play so i did not take my turbo to get rebuild i just swapped the wheels and put back together. i have had no problems ... but if your turbo is blown i would think you still need to get it rebuilt because the only thing that is getting changed is the compressor wheel and housing.

I would not swap compressor wheels without balancing....asking for trouble. They do it for a reason. Remember that thing is spinning upwards to 10000 rpms. Just think of little turbo bits bouncing around in your combustion chambers. Joshua...you got lucky or that thing is waiting to come apart. Just my .02. 350.00 for a good turbo rebuild or more than twice that for a motor and then a turbo rebuild. No reason to buy a complete VJ11. I can find you a housing and wheel..infact I probably have a housing..just need to find a wheel. If do it's 40.00 shipped to your door.
