Title: Need help
Post by: specter692000 on April 09, 2009, 11:00:00 AM
My mom owns a 1994 capri XR-2 turbo and from what we have been told the pick-up coil is dead.

Now when we tried to start it before finding this out it would crank and crank but no fire, we had the smell of gas, so as far as we know the fuel assemble is good.

Can somebody help me track down this part or would buying a new distributor my best bet thanks guys

Yep, Gostlrs is right! I do have one! Sounds like the ignitors in the dist. are shot.  They can be replaced, but, IMO, it'd be easier to just swap the whole unit. You could then keep the old one, and replace parts on it, and keep it as a spare.
I also have a XR2 computer, if that turns out to be the problem.

Hey Specter! The problems these cars have are nothing specific to Capris but cars in general. inside door pulls are probably the only things that a little more frequent than other cars. The more frequent problems that surface are door window mechanisms, headlight motors and shifter bushings in my experience. ECUs go out usually it is the connector is at the module is dirty. All of these are personal experiences.  Gus

thanks gus

I was looking around on some other sites and was wondering if maybe a fuse is blown in the fuse panel, because I have yet to check them.

Hey Spector! Check fuses, thats always the first place with anything electrical. It's most likely  wire though and usually under the hood and near the dist.  Gus

Now my mom is wanting to know where i can find a new crate motor for her car.

She would rater spend one big amount and get a new motor then keep trowing money at this one.

I know I know, but hey not my car just trying to help her out and know jack squat about these cars.

Hey Spector! Buying a crate motor won't help your problem. The don't come with Distributors or Electronics. Also they don't come with any Fuel Induction. You need a good service tech to find your problem. If you can't find one locally then Ricksservice is several hundred miles near-by in Indiana.  Gus

There is a post I made somewhere here that has a part # for the ignitor module, it is a Mitsubishi made part, and you can get on ebay fairly cheap. I'll see if I can dig it up

OK guys a little update.

My moms dad decided to get a hold of a guy at a chevy dealership and got her a new dis (I didn't see the new one so i have no idea what it looked like).  A guy he knows that works on cars came by and put the new one in, got nothing.  Checked fuel line and the pressure was good.  Sprayed starter fluid and said that there was defiantly something wrong with the firing.  Was wondering of there was any way that it could be the comp in the car or something else that we are over looking.

ok guys I have just been told that i get to find all the parts and get her car running.  And I will be completely honest I know nothing about this engine.

So long story short its still having the same problem where the pick-up coil is receiving the signal but not letting the car fire and now i have to figure out what is causing this and i have sent a message to Russ asking if he knew anything at all and I'm turning back here for any help at all.

I have checked and tested every fuse and they are all fine so im lost and need help she doesn't want to sell the car so i need some help.
