Title: Forum Upgrade?
Post by: shoeish on November 22, 2010, 11:09:00 AM
I am willing to host the next generation of TeamCapri, at no cost to everybody.  I would install, maintain, and transfer everything.  The original moderators could carry on, we would just have new software, and perhaps better search/organization.

Let me know.

I, in no way, want to step on anybody's toes.  I'm just offering.

The problem is that this forum software is so old that there are no database converters that it will directly convert it to something newer.

The forum is not MYSql based and that seems to be a large barrier.

I would not object to starting fresh if we could at least transfer the registration list over, but it would take a while to build everything back up.

I've been pressing for an upgrade/revamp for a while and talks have been had, but no direct action has been taken.

Looks like there are more converters available since UBB went completely under.

Count me in if we decide to take some new direction.  I would also be willing to support it with an injection of $...

I am just concerned about the potential loss of all the information that has been gathered over the years.  We have a huge database of info that we can not afford to lose.
If we can convert this forum, and not lose any info, I'm all for it.

I'm not too concerned about the older posts honestly, if you go way back a lot of the posts were filled with misinformation, and that could be very tough to iron out.

IIRC the domain and possibly the hosting are already paid ahead for a while.

Anthony where you at?

I'm with Russ on this one. I use this forum almost daily to answer my multitude of questions. I would hate to lose anything. Even if we keep some of the older posts that are a little misleading. It would be hard to determine what to keep and what to get rid of, so we might as well keep it all.

I am open for a forum upgrade but teamcapri has a home where it is at. When it upgrades it will stay right where it is at. I'm open to take donations for a professional to upgrade it but I will not be handing the site over to have it moved. I appreciate the offer or hosting and all but hosting is taken care of and I don't know you well enough to give you this forum. Sorry but the answer to you taken over and hosting a new site will have to be no. Matt I will be calling you to talk more about this.

Yeah I dont think handing the site over to someone thats been here two months is a great idea...

The only thing I dont like about this software is searching. Huge PITA.

Yeah I've only been on here a year and all this good info is priceless if ain't broke don't fix it............Lets work on a Capri Cruise from coast to coast. Something like the Harley HOG run except all Capris. Just think all those Capris on the freeway how cool. Every on ramp making the pack larger. Then when we all do the return trip the pack would get smaller with every exit. Lets make DC the destination.

Bump just to see if any progress or revelations have come along recently.

I'd still be interested enough to feed the site some $ for upgrades for a bit more interactivity, pic posting, etc. - if that turns out to be feasible.  It has been a while and there are always new technologies out there.
