My 1992 mercury capri xr2 sputters when I put in 3,4, and 5 gear what could that be? Please help!!

It drives fine in first and second then it doesn't want to accelerate

sounds possibly like a fuel supply issue... the cheapest and easiest thing to try first is to check the fuel pressure and replace the fuel filter.

My 91 na  did that and a fuel pressure regulator from an old aspire fuel rail did the trick for me ,she has no problems cruising 80 now.
