DIS changeover
« on: January 22, 2016, 02:31:24 AM »

I saw one thread from 2003 about Direct Ignition Systems, and that was during their relative infancy...
Has anyone thought further on doing this, and what kit to use(if one exists)? Google did not reveal much of anything tied to the B6x or the BPx...

Direct injection engines are fundamentally different - specially shaped pistons with significantly higher compression, cylinder heads and high pressure mechanical pumps - it would be a massive chore if even possible to convert one of our engines to Direct Injection

Uh, he said direct ignition, not direct injection.

You could patch in a complete Miata harness, computer, etc.. Wouldn't allow much boost. Too much work for combating the "occasional" misfire.

The capri computer doesn't have a appropriate signal output to ignite "A" "B"

What have you found on the interweb?

My mistake, sorry!

You'd want to look at what's called a COP setup, "Coil On Plug"

Megasquirt makes this very easy, there are many guys running BP engines with OE coils from a Toyota, controlled via Megasquirt

Are there any other gains to doing this other than not having the distributor and its minor drag on the cam? I'm glad to see this is actually a viable option, as I'm saving my megasquirt for the BP build that  I'll be doing down the road. Still might just blow up the B6T and go for a VR4 complete driveline.

The parasitic drag isn't much.

You'll notice massive improvement from being able to tune in your spark curve, and a stronger more reliable spark is also going to help.
You will lose the stock knock control system, but there is some other hardware out there that will talk to the MS for knock control.

I suppose this could also be done with a KL, yes?
