XR2 Build!
« on: May 07, 2024, 09:57:32 PM »

The day has finally come and I am making my second capri purchase, funny how you always end up with more than one of these things, however this one is a XR2. I wanted to know if there where any ideas of a good place to start with modding and building this car, I want to have fun and get it fast, I am down to try anything, I have been on this cite a bunch and have read a lot of great things, but as time goes on information and availability can change so I wanted to know if y’all had any updated advice, any help is greatly appreciate! I have heard great things about the rocket chip but don’t know where I would be able to buy one!

Good to hear someone working on one of these. The Rocketchip is make by the moderator here, Mathew Shayka. Be sure and check the turbo section on the home page, good luck and keep up informed.

On to step one, fixing everything that’s wrong with this, first and
most present, there is a slight coolant leak in the engine bay, under the distributer coming out of the block it’s a very short hose, picked a new one up at O’Reillys, but
It’s very hard to get to, I’m not even sure what it’s for, might go to the heater core, so I’ll have to get that done soon. As far as coolant is concerned it’s fairly clean however the thermostat is either acting up or is to high of a thermostats because it love to the engine very hot, I put a 180 degree in my base capri and am thinking about doing the same because it works very well. The second issue would be that on start up there is a slight ticking noise that happen for the first 1-5 minutes, the second I start driving it tends to go away, thought it might be the lifters, not sure thought because my base capri has the same thing very slightly and it only has 50k miles, one other this is the oil pressure, seems to not run very high at all, don’t know if that’s a normal thing but it generally runs rust about the low white line if that makes sense.  The third thing would be the shifter linkage bushing are gone making that not fun to shift but I have some coming in the mail. The next thing would be that the air bag light flashes, and for some time because someone put tape over it, not sure what it could be but I have heard it’s like the car trying to tell you what’s wrong so I’ll have to look at that for a bit. I will also have to rebuild or replace the headlight motor for the driver side because sadly it doesn’t work, I have quite a few capri parts that I am thinking about selling maybe on eBay or Facebook, I have a wing that is in good condition but needs to be painted I just don’t have space to paint it, I also have a original fully working stereo that I need to get ride of, I’m sure I have more parts I should sell but let me know if any of you want first dibs. Any advice or help is greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the club! I'll try to go through your list in order here. The sort hose under the distributor is the coolant flowing to the heater core. The easiest way to access it would probably be to remove the battery & battery tray.

Second issue - what makes you think the car is running hot? Where on the temperature gauge does the needle like to rest? Obviously fix the coolant leak before you do any further diagnosis here. Check and make sure your radiator fan kicks on - mine didn't so I'm not sure when it's supposed to. I have mine wired to a relay and switch so I can just turn it on when I want. The thermostat itself is easy enough to replace on these cars, but just use an OEM temperature one. Do you still have the factory radiator with plastic end tanks? If so, check it over real well. Mine exploded the first time I got the car up to temperature, right at the top tank. That plastic got super brittle.

Ticking/oil pressure. Without hearing it myself. I'd just assume its lifter tick. Especially if it goes away when you start moving. Just make sure the oil is clean, and I wouldn't worry. As for oil pressure, the service manual lists the following spec: "Regulating Pressure at 3,000 RPM - 343-441 kPa (50-64 psi). My car likes to run around 50 psi when it's cold, and around 20ish when it's hot. That's with the stock gauge, which I don't trust. I have an aftermarket oil pressure gauge I'm gonna install next time I have the oil out of my car.

Shifter bushings are a known issue with the Capri. The parts and guides are out there. I haven't done this yet, but need to, so sorry I can't be more help. Has your shifter fallen through the floor yet? My white car did that to me while it was up on the lift having it's engine removed, konked me right in the noodle. When your car does this to you, you can just run some self tappers through the sheet metal. Or riv-nuts and bolts if you aren't un-civilized like me.

There is one airbag in the car. It probably doesn't work. You can unplug the module up under the driver's side dashboard if the flashing light is annoying you. There's 3 crash sensors in the front bumper. the module, the airbag, and probably more sensors involved in this system. Any (and quite probably all of it) didn't age well. I haven't played with any of it other than swapping it from one chassis to the other.

The headlight motors can be disassembled and relubricated. I've seen a how-to on it somewhere. Probably written by Matt.

Go to the files section of the 1991-1994 Mercury Capri Owners Group in FB for info about cleaning the headlight motors and lots of other stuff.

Do not use a 180* thermostat. This causes the engine to operate in warmup mode. This causes premature engine wear and poor gas mileage. What is important is to use the proper two stage thermostat. The Australian Capri operates at a lower temperature and the ECU is programed for it. That's the reason the temp gauge appears to run hot. 195* is very near the top of the gauge. If you are not up at 225*, you're not hot. If it is and you have the correct thermostat and radiator cap and coolant level, you have another problem. Make sure the fan is operating correctly.

35lbs. hot oil pressure driving is pretty common and works fine. This sounds like what you are showing.

The air bag control is a blue box above the steering column, if you unplug it, you'll have a light on all time the key is turned. You can eliminate that by removing the bulb. I don't mind the light on but can't take that flashing.

That is a tutorial on replacing the bushing. You'll need a shoulder bolt for one of the front bushings and that is available from The Festiva Store ( https://thefestivastore.com/collections/sloppy-shifter-fix )

Hope I didn't miss anything, good luck.
