What are the best performance ad-ons for my stock 91 capri without going over a few hundred dollars ? I have been looking around just a little so far. I've found a site called www.streetbeatcustoms.com that has some upgrades for my car. They have a STAGE 3 SURGE Adjustable Performance Chip w/ O2 Sensor Control for $299 that I'm considering. I really like that it has a 10 year warranty and it is very easy to install. I've also looked at a cold air intake on this site with the pipe that goes between the engine and the mass air intake and then it has the filter on the intake to the mass air. It seems that the pipe between the engine intake and the mass air flow would be useless as it is only going to take in as much air as the mass air flow before it will allow. Is this correct ? What about a catalytic converter ? What is a good inexpensive brand that will add alot more free flow and how much power would it generally ad to a 100 horse power 1.6 capri ?

the biggest MAF you could get for the capri, but would require it to be tuned some, is ahte late 80s rx7 maf. its little larger then the xr-2s.

You'd be best off working on a nice cold air intake and a good custom exhaust with a set of headers. That "chip" is a waste of time. You can achieve the same thing by advancing your TPS a few degrees. Either way its not really going to add power, you need to increase airflow.

I've never worked with the N/A engine but you might be able to use an XR2 VAF as it is much larger than the N/A vaf.

Honestly it'd be well worth your money to look for an XR2 or a donor car for a turbo engine

get a turbo capri,you will be happier,i am keeping up with stock mustangs on the track and i'm not even chipped yet,will smoke them if i had the chip.
XR2'S the way to choose.

xr-2 maf will work without issues. cold airs dont do much, the system is build on that little door, cold or warm, it still takes the same force to move it, its a crappy design. you can pay about 1 grand and change it over to a vein system, but it is a lot, and your best off investing into a turbo system first.

Well I dont think I want to buy a turbo right now as they are more expensive than buying a good used XR2. I want to build on the capri I have for now. What would be the best performance ad-on I could buy. The best boost for the buck ?

advance your timing,get good spark plugs and if you could find a good i energy coil,run higher octane fuel,k&n filter,gut your cat and put a bigger exhaust. i have no cat on mine with a 2 1/2 inch resinator in place and a 2 1/2 inch custom bent aluminized exhaust into a kdm can style muffler,and it flows and sounds good noticed a big diffrence,don't know what kinda state laws you have on emissions but if you can find a back woods muffler shop they will bend you up a nice exhaust with ease.i have about 150 bucks into my exhaust.

Cheap & Easy Fit Mods:
----------------------

1. Full exhaust system 2.25" all the way, mandrel bends, High flow cat, 4-2-1 extractors.
(I have a post and pic here regarding my set-up, refer to it.)

2. RamPod Uni filter or something similar.

3. Set of "Light Weight" Rims. Your stock wheels are steel and are too heavy. Makes a difference. Trust me. make sure their light-weights.
(again, I have a post on this also)

Do these 3 and you will notice a considerbale difference.

Mild Mods:
----------

- MSD Ignition System. (our ignition system is hopeless)
- New ECU ( our stock ECU is shockin')
 Look up Autronic, Haltech, EMS etc)
- Throttle Body; either open it up, get a bigger one, or get a twin or quad setup.

Hardcore Mods: Big Bickies
--------------------------

- Bore the block
- Polish and port the intake
- Pistons + Valves + rods
- Camshaft re-grind
- turbo or supercharge

And so it goes on and on and one.......

Do the first three items.... you'll be happy.

If you want a lot more performance without going turbo, swap in a 1.8L BP DOHC from a Ford Escort, Mercury Tracer, or a Mazda Protege

There is some fairly involved wiring needed to mesh the different harness, but otherwise it'll pretty much drop right in. The passengerside motor mount needs to be cut out a bit and re-drilled but its fairly minor
