Cold Air Intake
« on: December 05, 2010, 12:20:00 AM »

Hello again, Fellas!

I know there has been a lot of talk on here about CAIs, but I have been unable to find a "Cold Air Intake for Dummies" post. I have a 91 NA and would like to install an inexpensive CAI.

Could someone post some pics of what needs to be modified (if anything) and an idiot proof (that's me) shopping list of what I need to buy?

I do not have any way to fab anything and I do all my work in the parking lot of an apartment building, so if possible, KISS (keep it simple stupid)

Thanks in advance...

The NA one is easy....you can make it yourself.

ebay has the filter and adapter for like 10 bucks..then you can just get some 2.5in pipe and couplers to make the rest...

Spectre sells pipes at the car stores as well or online..you can piece something together..i did with my first setup on my turbo

http://www.spectreperformance.com/#HOME

Stock

My 1st set up with the Spectre

Final set up using the 2.5in pipes

Agreed with the above.  I'd love to see some shots of where it connects to the compressor as well if you have any.  Are you running a stock turbo?  A parts list would be so fantastic!

Yes, a parts list would be great and if anyone has something similar for an NA setup, that would be awesome. I was looking at the Spectre pipes at Advance Auto and they only have 3", I see the 2 1/2" on the Spectre site, guess I can order from there instead.  I really have no idea what to get, so specifics would be very helpful.

Thanks again!

very basic intake made from sewer couplers from home depot ... worked well for me and now i have an intake made with these 3 parts

http://www.siliconeintakes.com/product_info.php?cPath=14&products_id=907&osCsid=325f4367f122e98e54e05832d27855e2

from turbo to a small 2.5 inch pipe

http://www.siliconeintakes.com/product_info.php?cPath=14&products_id=385&osCsid=325f4367f122e98e54e05832d27855e2

from 2.5 pipe to MAF the 3" is a tight fit on MAF little hard to get on but it will get on

then i am running

http://www.siliconeintakes.com/product_info.php?cPath=16&products_id=2016&osCsid=325f4367f122e98e54e05832d27855e2

filter

dont have a pic will get one if you need it i like this intake setup very well it lays the MAF flat and puts small mushroom filter far to the right away from engine

Thanks guys, that all gives me a place to start. I was looking at Advance Auto this morning for all the bits to put this together and they really didn't have much there. I will take a look at Autozone when I get a chance. Still would like to know what pieces are needed for an NA, if possible.

Thanks!

$26 SPT 9299 -- 2.5 OD 90 Degree Mandrel Bend
$12 SPT 9209 -- 2.5 OD 4 inch pipe
$14 SPT 9219 -- 2.5 OD 6 inch pipe

$17 SPT 9301, 9302, 9306 -- 2.5 OD to 2.5 OD coupler

-(9301-Black, 9302-Red, 9306 Blue)

$16 SPT 81413 -- 3 inch VAF Adapter (Needs to be drilled to fit the capri VAF) For use with cone-style air filters.

$25 SPT 8162, 8166, 8168 -- Shorty Cone Filter(This is what I used it fits without needing to move the coolant reservoir)

-(8162-Red, 8166-Blue, 8168-Silver/Grey)

$161 est.

Might need to measure what straight pipes you'll need though, this was just me pulling out the available parts off their site.  Autozone had a large amount of parts available, but A&A should have more yet, if you live in PA.

This is exactly what I needed. Thanks guys. If anyone with a completed NA intake has some pics they could post, I would be most grateful! Not to be a pest, but I haven't done this before and don't want to screw it up.

THANKS!!

really...it is that simple...

coupler
pipe with holes (will need fittings)
coupler
2.5 straight (cut to desired length)
90 coupler
3.0 straight (cut to desired length
coupler
vaf
new air filter with adapter

brackets to secure

I think most here are happy with just adding a filter and being done..the NA is super slow compared to the turbo

I hear ya. I may go the same route and just do a filter, but I wanted to explore the option.
