2.0l replacing 1.6l is it possible???

Moparman65:
So I got this wild and crazy idea the other day, and I was wondering if anyone else has done, tried, failed or was succussful at this or could point me in the right direction. I want to make this car my little race car and drop a 2.0l turbo in place of the 1.6l it would jump massively in front end weight, horsepower, and compression if I did. Any ideas guys cause this capri would be something else if I could make this not just a dream but a crazy reality.

The 1.8 BP is a good option, and would be less work than any available 2.0L engine. I have a thread here in the Engine Swaps section regarding the finer details.

Did you have a particular 2.0L in mind, or is that just the displacement that seems good to you?

Swapping engines may not make the car more nose-heavy. Keep in mind we have an iron block. Going to one that might be all-aluminum may actually save weight.

The Ford ZETEC engine came in 1.6, 1.8, and 2.0L flavors, and the 2.0 has recently caught my eye. In some of the Ford Escort models ( the ZX2 I believe) the Zetec 2.0L came mated to a G-series transmission. While not identical to our transmissions (different shifting mechanism, bolt pattern, mounts) the axles appear to use the same inboard splinecount, which would mean you could use stock XR2 axles with it.

If that is the case, then the hardest part of swapping in a different engine in is already solved (axles!) Fabbing mounts would take some work, as would wiring with the much newer Zetec engine, but no custom axles would be needed. (this is not to say it will otherwise fit without clearancing, I don't know, yet. Even the BP swap requires some clearancing)

Zetec as far as I know is okay power-wise but responds very well to boost.

The Mazda MZR engine has been catching my eye, it's a 2.3 or 2.5L engine depending which you get, but it's nowhere near bolt-in. But makes some incredible power in n/a form. Too pricey for me to play with yet. I'm sticking with my BP for the time being, if I run across a Zetec cheap I'll consider it.

Purely out of curiosity, Rocketman - What models does the MZR engine appear in?

Rocketman:
Newer Mazda models, Mazda6 etc it looks. Ford also has a flavor of it under the Duratec name

You might want to look into an FE3 engine. I am told it is a much easier swap than one of the newer engines, and they are built strong as hell.

Personally I think it would be easier to just play with the 1.6 though. With the right turbo (TD04HL) you can get 280HP, with boost starting to build at <2000RPM, and full boost at <3000RPM, and massive amounts of midrange, which is what you need for good performance on the street.

This is the exact setup I am going for, with a JDM B6T(only for the stronger rods and bignose crank), forged 9:1 pistons, Megasquirt ECU and a strengthened stock gearbox with an LSD. I had a drive in a fwd 323 built by my tuner to these exact specs, and it was just amazing. I believe he managed a low 13sec pass on street tyres. Obviously you need to do all the rest of the stuff like intercooler, fuel delivery, exhaust etc as well.

Despite their small size, these B6T engines are quite torquey, and it would be a lot less hassle to work with the stock engine and push it a bit harder, than it would be to transplant a new one and then still have to go through the trouble of turbocharging it which would require most of the same work anyway(ECU, Pistons, potentially rods, fuel system, manifolds, etc)

The added drivetrain shock of the bigger engine would probably just result in more broken gearboxes and smokey tires too.
