The popping sound you hear is your mechanics heels as he prepares to do you in. But really, chances are you have a bad strut and it is causing your CV joint to flex. Either way, the mechanic gets happy.

I hear the same sound and have been since I've owned my car. I replaced the struts and springs but I still hear the popping sound.

well thats reassuring...lol. i guess its just one of those quirks that we have to deal w/. i also was wondering if it could actually be the control arm itself. is that possible?

I am having this same problem and I have found the culprit.  It is the control arm bushings, or lack there of.  The control arm is moving when you brake, forcing  the axle to hit inside the tranny.  But the big question is:

WHERE IN THE WORLD CAN WE GET THE BUSHINGS????

Have found a website with a lot of universal sizes   http://polybushings.com/pages/bushingsbysize.html   but I don't know the sizes since the bushings are gone.

I've got an answer for you....

Front lower control arm bushings.

http://www.globalperformanceparts.com/product_info.php?products_id=19221

Here are the trailing arm bushings if anybody needs these..

http://www.globalperformanceparts.com/product_info.php?products_id=19092

I can't find the rear control arm bushings. I have the part number from superpro if you really need that part maybe someone that deals with superpro could order them for you. The part number is (spf103rk)

To the moderator....this might be a good post to make sticky with those links to the hard to find bushings in there.

Hey Yuri! Did you actually find the bushings bad? In one of my cars I found the spot welds separated where the front frame and body come together I had to put the car on jack stands and bring things into alignment with a floor jack and then run several short beads of mig weld to keep it together. It had taken me several looks to find this, I had to scrape a lot of under coating away to see this. Gus.

Begin lubing the front bushing bolt long before you decide to change them. Its held into the frame by a squarenut. The squarenut is only held into place by a shitty stamped steel cover, it bends out of the way when you put too much stress on the bolt (ie when its rusted a bit). These things are inside the framerail so they're near impossible to hold still.

Ive spun those nuts on all 3 capri's that I've owned. Lubing the threads on it with penetrant really helps out, and can prevent problems. On the ones that have come loose from the cover I've had to weld the stupid nuts into place, thru the tiny access ports behind the bushing. No fun.

Hey Rocketman! we need more suspension discussions such as those in the 323forum on Nissan Pathfinders. Wouldn't you agree? Gus.

We could use some more in depth tech discussion but unfortunately most of my knowledge lies under the hood as opposed to behind the wheels. Some of the 323 guys really know what they're doing so I usually go to them if I need help.

i believe that i've figured out what my popping sound was... i was under my car last night, and i grabbed and pulled a random bar that i could see... and POP, i found the source of my sound. There's a support bar whose bolts came loose, i'm going to tighten it down to see if it stops my problem.

here's the bolt that loosened up

and this is the other end of said bar
