boost rich
« on: December 10, 2011, 10:21:00 AM »

so today i notice every time I let off the accelerator after boosting I get a huge cloud of white smoke behind my car.  I thought crap i need a new head gasket again, but oil and coolant are still at there correct levels.  I also noticed that every time i boost my car goes wayyyyy rich so I'm thinking the white smoke is unburned hydrocrabons.  any ideas why its boosting so rich. I'm thinking crank the boost to even it out? lol but that could end badly.

Unburnt gas /running way too rich will almost always be black smoke.

hhhmmmmmm.  I wonder what all the white smoke is from then. coolant is the whole way full. I put a new o2 sensor in it too and that made no difference.  It just recently started reading rich though and I can feel how much power it looses as soon as it shoots up to rich.  runs/idle fine and it pulls hard when the turbo spools up, but as soon as it gets to full boost it just looses all the power and reads way rich.  Then you let off the throttle there is no smoke.  The smoke actually comes next time you hit the gas.  The longer I was boosting, the more smoke.  If I dont boost at all it doesn't smoke at all.

Turbo.......

Happens under boost & fine at idle...Your seals are bad. Check for shaft play. Pull off the downpipe. I bet its wet there....

Downpipe is clean and dry.  Absolutly no shaft play.  Its the tightest turbo i've ever owned! (without being seized XD). but I took the car out for a 200 mile drive last night (hard driving) and just checked the coolant level, it was down about an inch. very slow coolant leak? where else could i be burning coolant other than head gasket?  and why would it burn that slow?

As mentioned in another thread the coolant also flows through the bottom of the intake manifold and the throttlebody.

Did you have the head checked for cracks?

I had it magnafluxed but that was before it ended up on this capri and about 15k miles before now when i redid the valves and seats.  is there anyway to bypass the throttlebody coolant passage?  or a gasket set with those gaskets. I'm pretty sure it isn't the intake manifold gasket because I replaced that when i redid the bottom end.

Run a new piece of coolant line from the idle valve to the coolant bypass line (bypass the throttlebody). You'll see where it runs to the throttlebody. It might be leaking through under hard vacuum or something?

I'm not gonna see any problems from just bypassing it altogether?  I mean the manufacturer ran coolant through there for a reason...

It's a safety measure in super cold climates incase ice builds up on the throttle blade. It's the first thing I bypass on my cars, i've never had a problem

Bypassed the TB coolant and smoke is gone! Now should I worry about changing the gasket anyways since it obviously had a leak?

Yes, I'd replace it. If it's been leaking coolant it could be leaking air.

In my experience the gasket is a special order item that'll take a day or two to come in, but super cheap, and easy to replace.

Glad it was something simple

Thanks a bunch for answering all my questions! I'm glad I've finally got my car running right to. Now I get to crank the boost!!! I'm gonna be looking for a rocketchip soon! Is there any way you could program your chip for more than 16 psi?  I think my car could handle it...
