Piggyback management
« on: June 03, 2009, 12:34:00 PM »

Hey Guys!  Does anyone know about or have experience with piggyback engine management systems? I know rocketman is setting up a complete replacement system that includes individual coils on the plugs but I'm not looking to go that elaborate. I want to be able to dial fuel and timing curves once I get my project underway. There are several systems out there including Haltech and a frequently mentioned unit in another forum called an F-Con. I'd appreciate any comments or input.  Gus

a good friend of mine works for haltech here in lexington, there expensive but some of the best auto electronics available...

piggyback computers are not the best thing for tuning, and as for changing timing electronically forget it..
all they really do is modify the signal recieved by your ecu and on our old technology cars this just aint the way.. keep it old school and simple thats the beauty of our cars..

we actually had a prelude not too long ago running a APEXi V AFC basicly an air fuel controller or piggyback .. we took it off and re ran the wires to factory spec and achieved gains from removing it.

i dont like piggybacks especially on hondas. its so much easier to run a p-28 ecu and chip socket it. run a laptop and make a map.. and then use a chip burner to flash your tune onto the ecu..
kinda like how i think rocket makes the rocket chips.. only you can tune the map realtime with a laptop with a p28

i actually thought about switching over to map, and honda sensors, and running the engine on a p-28 honda ecu. expense and complication has made me think twice ..
i think a megasquirt is the best bang for the buck for our cars and alot cheaper than a halltech or other stand alone computer...
that will also let you run a four post DIS ignition like a miata.

Hey RCI! Megasquirt as you probably know is what rocket is working with. Also I can pick up an Apexi that hasn't been installed From a gentle I know. He bought it for a Honda he no longer has. I'd like to also hear from rocket. It'll be atleast a couple of months before I get there.  Gus

Stay away from any "AFC" (air/fuel controller) like the apexi SACF...they dont work with our ECUs because of the weird voltage our airflow meters use. At least they dont work properly. Its not a very good way to tune.

I've run my Megasquirt as a fuel-only system. This way I can control fuel as I want it, and I let the stock ECU/ dizzy / knockbox take control of the ignition.

I was going to run a Miata CAS with the megasquirt so I can run coilpacks, I dont want to do COP's yet.

The FCON increases fuel just like a chipped ECU, only it needs its own computer and sensors to do it

If you wanna do timing curves, you're going to have to do a full standalone...be it Megasquirt, Haltech, electromotive, autronic... A lot of them will require a trigger wheel to be attached to the crank pulley and a VR sensor to read it, along with coilpacks or COPs. I'm told most of the higher end units need professional tuning or at least solid time on a dyno to dial everything in (tough to do fuel & timing simultaneously on the street)
