Engine Swap Stories
« on: August 07, 2009, 07:25:00 AM »

Just for shigs and tiggles has anyone swapped anything larger into their xr2 and/or converted it to rwd. I have heard it to be possible to swap in the bp, bpt or klze motors but has anyone physically done it? Just for fun guys lets hear the stories.

There is a rumor of a monster AWD, BP powered Capri running around the Pocono mountains area. They call it the GTXR2........

I've heard of this GTXR2...I've also heard its not for the faint of heart...

BP, and BPT are possible and have been done, RWD is possible but would have to be nearly 100% custom. There are no parts that would bolt on, and a massive amount of cutting and custom fabbing would be required.

BP and BPT require cutting of the framerail, modding engine mounts, modding the jackshaft mount, and all sorts of rigging for the fuel lines and intake piping. Its really, really tight.

The KLZE has been proven to fit in a BF 323 engine bay, but noone to my knowledge has ever crammed it into a capri. I think the KLZE requires a different gtype (i'm not positive on that one) but that would require custom or hybrid axles. Would be a screamer though!

I also have an 88 323 fwd hatch waiting for a powertrain. It is wired for a B6T but was thinking about a BPT. I could be for sale. It has a Merc Tracer interior.

swapping a bpt would be kind of a waste wouldnt it? isnt it the same block as the b6t just bored .20 and larger pistons?

Heck no! The 1.8 block is an inch longer, and crank, pistons, block, head, cams, manifolds are all different. Its very worth it though the 1.8 has a much flatter power curve to it.

Some manufacturers do use the same block for both a 1.6 and a 1.8 but not Mazda. The only thing common between the two engines is the connecting rods.

More info here:

PS: The BPT gtx engine is 180hp stock, and if you can find a gtr BPT, it runs 210hp stock... a lot better base than 132hp the B6T makes stock.
