Well I blew my 3rd ihi turbo and now I can't find another one.  I would really like to have my xr2 back on the road, but I hate limping her around town without the turbo so I'm currently in my backup 93na. Given that the vj14 and vj11 turbo's keep getting harder to find and more expensive, I would like to put some other type of turbo/supercharger on my car. I have $400 to put towards my car for the time being and I'm wondering if any type of conversion is availible for that kind of money.  It would be nice to switch to something like a talon turbo which are a dime a dozen, but I don't know of anywhere that makes manifolds for the capri.  Thanks for any imput.

Why do they keep blowing? Is the oil drain clear? Oil restrictor on the feed in place?

Massive overboosting? Low oil pressure?

To go through 3 otherwise good turbos like that points to a problem elsewhere.

You can have a shop make a sandwich adapter plate for you, as opposed to making a new manifold. Or go the Joe route and have a flange welded directly to the manifold. You could probably have this done for $400 or so, with a new downpipe made up for the new turbo

Thats my problem, I have no idea why they keep blowing. The first one blew with the car still at stock boost levels and no modifications done to the car what so ever.(about 2 years ago) The second one blew within a month of the first. Then the car sat for a year. Then over the last year I rebuilt the head and bottom end (because I was thinking low oil pressure as well) and did all the modifucations to the car. I put 2k on the car then my diff bearings went out, fixed the bearings put another 4k on the car, then pop goes the turbo. The last turbo I bought I hybrided and ran at 14psi high boost and 5 low boost.  I only used the high boost once a week as well. Yes to the oil restrictor and yes to the drain being free and clear.  I would have no problem swapping a turbo every now and then if I could even get my hands on one!  Its just irritating watching my car sit on jack stands after I've put all this time and money into it.

Was reading some old posts and stumbled on joes old idea for using a d series honda manifold. has anyone tried this? Seems pretty simple and promising.

Re-drilling the flange? Or welding on a B6T head flange?

Joe didn't do that, but it's been theorized for a  several years on the 323 boards for. Don't think anyone has actually done it though.

Space might be tight but you won't know till you try

Redrilling the flange.  I'm trying to figure out which manifold is most likely to fit, there are everything from ramhorn mani's to little cast iron ones.

Well I would say stay away from the cast stuff, as the bolt head clearances are usually cast into place. Unless the patterns are *that* close but I don't think they are.

On a tubular style you can move them anywhere you want, for the most part

Just keep in mind horizontal clearance when selecting manifold styles, this is a cheap tubular style on my 1.8... it' intended for an Escort. I don't have much clearance to the radiator, let alone if I installed a turbo there

 

I'm going to have to figure something else out, adapter plate or finally cast new manifolds like I want
