Swapping a XR2 into a GTX?
« on: September 09, 2010, 06:57:00 AM »

The guys I just picked up my hard top from are going to swap  the XR2 in to a GTX. Was wondering what needs to be done since they would have the ECU. Do they need the XR2 ECU or the 323 & splice it. Do the trannys match up? He wanted me to pick up the rest of the car less engine but don't need all that. They do have extra turbos that I could buy & slowly work on a hybrid. Read somewhere here the engines are tilted 15 degrees differently-could be wrong though. Before he takes it to junk I'm trying to figure out what they need compared to what I need. Any info is good. I recommended they check here but I can just call 'em back. Thanks Rob

Its only the BP (1.8L) engine that is tilted forward. The 323 GTX is a B6T just like the XR2. Infact they're identical save for two items - the connecting rods (GTX are stronger) - and the oil pan. The FWD oilpan will not fit to the AWD transmission (lol believe me I've tried)

Aside from the distributor plug being different, its a direct replacement for the stock GTX engine. They can retain their old harness & ecu.

Any idea of who these guys are?

Yeah my brother did 3 GTX's(0-60 in 4 seconds on last build-sold), so he's dealt with them before I think for donors but I can't remember the shop name. They've never done one of these apparently. I recognized the place right when I got there in Denver. I'll PM you their # if you want to call long distance. So I could use the ECU while you chip it(awhile still though RM-still dead broke). They bought the donor I was after while waiting for funds in a week or so, but got the top immediately(%*^% borrowed the $). Let me know what else I may be able to use if there's anything I kind of mentioned.

I'm going to go & cut out that plexiglass rear window & get my pos soft top down, so I'll check back later. By the way there wasn't a rear defog switch but when I pulled a bigger than normal(stock) piece out of the switch spot there's a plug in. Are they all ready to go like that or am I going to need a relay I read about. Looks ready for most any 4 prong switch that fits. Where's the relay is a better question?

All Capri's come pre-wired from the factory for fog lights + hardtop defrosters. You will need the defrost switch in the dash & the relay in the trunk near the rollover switch.

If you need a switch and relay, let me know, I have several!

I see a connector by the rollover button, runs into the same wiring buts looped. Probably not it? I def. need the switch & if this connector isn't the relay I'll need both & a how too I guess. Shoot I had too look up on how to get the stupid top down by pushing back on the center bar! It's old age for sure. Give me a week or so until I have $ & for sure. "check the owners manual on putting down the top", yeah thanks workshop manual. What is the connector by the rollover? Is that the relay?-------Short list for winter; tires, defogger switch, radiator hose, nice spark plug wires//then whatever I can afford after covering X-Mas early. My profile is like yours but I'm a school loan borrower. Transpo. costs are allowed!

Oh yeah, sheet of plexiglass for sale. Fits rear soft top perfectly & even includes some extra soft top! I'll post a pic of that connector in a bit, run errands. Gotta kiss GF's butt for fronting me the hard top $.

If its just a plug with nothing in it, then yes that is the connector, and you will need a relay!

Sorry to dredge up this ancient thread ... I got into my "new to me" '93 XR2 this morning for what was, really, my first real drive in daylight.  No defroster switch I can find.  Haven't seen it listed at midcomustang either (yet) --- I assume I need to get in touch with you too, Russ?  If one *was* installed, where should the switch be?

The defrost switch would be near the A/C switch in the dash

Well, that explains it ... no switch.

Russ, is the switch and relay listed on your website?

Might not be on the website yet, but I'm pretty sure it's in the catalog
