aftermarket guages
« on: May 02, 2011, 03:59:00 PM »

well i got my capri running yesterday, but the gauges are scary. I prim it and start it and theres no oil pressure and the temp always runs hot, any sugestions for aftermarket guages? and how to they hook up? does it screw into where the sending unit in the block goes?

i was thinking off something like this and mount it in the space below the radio

As far as I know what happens is that the gauge itself loses calibration over time, and they replace them with those cheesy C-H L-H gauges.

The oil pressure never changes though?  That might be a wiring issue to the sender itself, if it was off, I'd still expect it to hop up a bit at higher RPM's.

90% of the oil gauges I've seen have just never worked, I'm not really sure what the issue is. Some seem to work okay.

The temp gauge will run up 3/4 or more on the scale, this is normal.

If you want to add aftermarket gauges, you'll have to find the correct adapters or fittings to screw into the block. You could use the thermostat housing for the coolant, and add a Tee or just replace the oil pressure sender.

RC - I don't think they don't lose calibration, they're just crap gauges to begin with. Thats why ford switched to the High-Low style, because of customer complaints about the guages running way off what they consider "normal" on the scale.

you can very easily put those gauges into the car and they are not hard to install

i just used a T to tap into the oil sending unit because i wanted to keep my other gauge somewhat working and the coolant i put in place of the fan temp sensor, will be working on getting both working soon.

Well like I said, my gauges are the OE numbered gauges, and they all work outstanding, except for the fuel gauge.  I just assumed they run out eventually, even with my car nearly 160,000 miles.

its the stock holder that goes under the radio and i just got a small piece of thin plexi glass (wood works as well) and glued it to the box. it made it easier to install that way!
