How much is a 1994 XR2 worth
« on: September 09, 2011, 01:52:00 PM »

A family member has one they want to me to sell for them, what is the average sell price.  $1000 sounded a bit low considering I payed $1900 for mine on it's 2nd engine and over 140,000 on the chassis.

100,000 miles. Reef Green.

A 1994 XR2 has a production of estimated 500-ish.  I thought that made it more valuable then a normal XR2, along with it's faster rack and modified rear suspension.

And, the production numbers are not estimated, they are confirmed at 366 built, and 358 shipped to the US. Of those, the car you pictured was #190 off the line, one of 91 painted in Reef Green and was originally a New Jersey car.....

That particular car actually has 93K on it, not 100K as the Craigslist ad said.

Perhaps I can talk the new owner (   ;)   ) into posting some pictures of the car here.

Just curious, how long has your family member owned that car lot?

I was planning on buying that car but, whoever bought it has to put in at least $2000 to get it right.  To be honest it's the 2nd worst capri I've seen, and the 1st worst was also a turbo model.

I honestly feel bad for the sucker who bought it.  The car is significantly worse then pictured, seats are torn, stereo was replaced with an aftermarket.  Heavy damage on the bumper and driver's side fender.  Interior smells like mold, top is faded to heck.

I believe my Dynamic White '94 XR2 with 93,000 miles is worth $6500.  Perhaps more if I were to sell it to someone in California whose name I won't mention...

MARK- I would guess your valuation on your car is correct. It is a beautiful Capri, and one of the best I have seen. Lol, that guy from CA is an idiot!!

RCDRACO- hmmmm, so let me get this right.....A family member was selling the car, but you were concerned the asking price was too low, for "the 2nd worst capri" you've ever seen? You were going to buy it, but feel sorry for the "sucker" that beat you to it? Strange......
No need to feel sorry for them. I'd bet they know EXACTLY what they got into. I'll wager they have an extensive knowledge of Capris, and a very large supply of parts that can turn that car into something really nice. I'd also bet your evaluation of the car ("2nd worse??") is a little off, as well. Were you aware that car has ZERO rust? That the underneath of that car looks new? That it runs and drives well, and has only 93K? All the damage to the car is purely cosmetic. A new bumper, a fender and some simple body work will get the outside good as new. For the interior, a carpet cleaning, a different set of seats, and a few other bits and pieces, will get rid of the moldy smell and and make the car look great! Your $2000 estimate would be about right, IF you had to buy all the parts needed. But, lets use me as an example (JUST AS AN EXAMPLE!!): If I had been the sucker that bought that car, and I used the 94 XR2 parts and other Capri parts that I already own, my total cost would be around $12.50.

So, again, there is probably no reason to feel sorry for them. I'm sure they knew EXACTLY what they were buying. I'm also sure they used an extensive network of friends, contacts, and business partners to ensure they weren't walking in to this blindly. I'll pass along your concern to them, though. They'll appreciate it.

Oh, in case you thought $1000 was to much for a car in such bad shape, no need to fret. I would also bet the person who bought it has some pretty good negotiation skills!! My guess is the car sold for MUCH less than the asking price!!

"2nd worst capri" you've ever seen? You really haven't seen much then, have you?

So let me get this straight - you made up a story to play the TeamCapri community to appraise this particular car for you? And now that the car is sold to someone else, you're all butthurt you didn't get it? The purchaser is a "sucker"!! LOL!

It's utterly hilarious that you think someone is a sucker for paying that much for a car in this shape (especially when you originally stated you thought $1000 was "a little low"). Russ said the chassis is rust-free - maybe they bought it to restore it? Given the value of Mark's white 94 above - it could definitely be worth it.

Also - The 94 XR2 did not have just a "modified rear suspension" - the whole suspension was modified. Stiffer struts, lowered from the factory, and balljoint ends on the swaybar instead of bush-and-link in addition to a slightly tighter ratio steering rack.

FWIW: I paid $950 for my first 91 XR2 (142k) with a hardtop & extra full set of wheels & snow tires. And $500 for the XR2 (150k) I have now needing minor mechanical work. $1900 is a little high for 140k + needing an engine

Thanks, Russ -

It is a nice car.  BTW, I meant to return your call about next year, but I've been on the road a lot lately.  I'll call later...

I will not deny my pleasure in suspecting there is another Capri being pulled back from the threshold of scrap.

Or at least being scrapped to help keep others from the scrappers.

Is there a site or thread for the production breakdowns and VIN stuffs?  I thought I saw a page for all that some time back but my brain is tired.
