Title: Tbird turbo with vj14
Post by: snaponcapri on January 30, 2017, 08:32:32 PM
Just wondering guys I've got a 87 ihi tbird turbo but no vj11 bought it out of impulse for the Capri but after doing alittle more research on the form I found that I need a vj11 can the tbird upgrade be done with just the vj14 and tbird or will inner to find a vj11. P.s I've got a guy that has an as11 is that similar which can be used or no thanks guys (http://shopping.kinugawaturbo.com/images/products/detail/ggg.17.JPG)

You will want the VJ11 turbine housing. It CAN be done with the VJ14 turbine housing, but it is not recommended - the VJ11 is overall wider (internally) and offers more flow - which is needed to properly match what the Tbird compressor can do.

Never heard of the AS11 - unlikely that it will bolt to the stock manifold, only a very few select IHI turbos do

You could also just do the VJ14/11 hybrid and be pretty happy. This turbo will be good to 16psi with a Rocketchip. You keep the quick spool and run up to redline without a problem.

Also, finding a good VJ11 turbine housing that isn't cracked into oblivion will be a feat of pure luck.

It's incredibly rare to find them uncracked.

We did not curse you. The reason why they are all cracked is nobody, and I mean nobody ever took care of their turbos on the Probe GT's, 626GT's and the MX-6 GT's. They ran them hard and put them away hot. Always let them cool down on idle before shutting the motor off. Keyword here is turbo timer. I have taken apart hundreds of them and only a very few have been good enough to use in my opinion. My opinion includes putting time and money into them and not just running them all cracked up. Now that you have them apart you will be putting $$ in them for kits and cleaning and a balance so choose wisely. If it is a VJ11 it will say that on the compressor housing with a part# F220 and the turbine housing will bolt up to your B6t exhaust manifold. Good luck.

I believe it's a flaw in the casting/design of the casting. Same deal why so many XR2 manifolds are cracked.

Living their entire life in a carbon rich environment at elevated temperatures, carbon will leach into the casting, and this can make the casting more brittle. This exacerbates the design flaws (connected thick & thin sections with high temperature gradients during operation)

Yup what Matt said. Still need the VJ 23 adapters when you get a chance.

Musta lucked out with mine. I didn't even know they might be cracked. We are talking about the compressor housing of the vj11,correct? Mine was and is fine, as was the CHRA, but I found a new CHRA cheap enough to tempt me into shelfing the used one. Love the hybrid. Nicest thing about running one is the huge dent it puts in the turbo lag when running a 2-1/2" exhaust, a 7/8" ported waste gate, and an MBC.  ;D
Got that nice split in the exhaust manifold though, but aside from a little discoloration, seems to be harmless. No problems with O2 sensor so far, so I'll keep running it.

Turbine housing made from castiron, not the aluminum compressor housing :)

Ok then, I have a beautiful vj11 turbine housing with a lightly ported (with only an arbor stone) wastegate. I also  have a very good used CHRA that went with it originally. Last summer I bought this very good looking vj11 from a CL seller in Fort Wayne who had pulled this one from a boneyard as a spare for his Probe and never used it. I ended up only using the vj11 compressor housing to create my hybrid since I found the brand new CHRA core for under $180. The used vj11 CHRA has virtually no play, spins freely and the blades all look fine. I was just going to keep the turbine housing and CHRA around as a spare, but does someone need them? Without the vj11 compressor housing, i don't see how they are of much use.

That there's a purdy housing.

That looks like a usable housing. What does it look like down in the throat, that is where you will see any crack starting.

Look down into the throat where it blows in from the manifold and look at the inside of the waste gate hole. That is the killer on these. That crack spreads through the housing and out the waste gate.

No problems down the throat. All that you see are the casting marks (line visible) which are fine. You can see the wast gate has some porting, could go bigger still. Waste gate measures 0.704".

Nice hang on to that one.   A unicorn for sure. I found another one this past weekend. Opened it up and said oh boy this looks good. Then I got a look inside and there was that all to often rat crack running into the gate.
