Title: will 90-93 mazda 323 coilovers fit on 90 ford capri?
Post by: mogli on April 10, 2011, 09:56:00 PM
hi there, i am thinking of getting coilovers for my 1990 capri based in australia, and i saw a couple of good deals on ebay for coilovers for mazda 323 1990-93, was wondering if these would fit? i know that several parts from the mazda 323 do fit and i read somewhere that he used coilovers for a mazda 323 1989 model for his capri and no problems, however here in australia i could only get the coilovers for the 1990s models and upwards...
and getting specific capri ones, are 4-5 times more expensive than the mazda 323 ones,
so if anyone had experience, tried it himself or knows, pls let me know asap, thanks and greetz from down under

Nope, you'll want the earlier ones from the 86-88 range of cars that share our engine.  Those happen to be pretty common, here at least.

First off, are you looking at complete coilover kits? (strut+spring+mounts, etc) If so, then no the 90+ 323 won't work.

IF you are looking at a spring + collet kit, using the OEM struts -It *may* work. BG 323 struts are different at the mount points, but the tube diameters might be the same, so its possible the BG323 kit might fit (if its not the whole strut)

Ground Control makes coilover kits for the capri. Look into that first. Otherwise look into other BF chassis 323/Lasers 86-89 NOT 4wd

I'm running a super cheap set of Honda Civic coilovers on my capri presently (over top OEM style struts) it works but the ride is super rough. I'll be getting proper springs for it soon

Hope that helps.

No. The cheap coilover sleeve kits can be used but a full coilover kit intended for a civic will not work at all

Also, unless you cut the spring perch off and add a sleeve rest, you won't get a proper range of adjustment. In my sig, the fronts are bottomed out, and its just shy of stock ride height

thanks for the info so far.

@ rocketman, i was thinking of only getting the springs and sleeves and using the oem struts. thing is i hit the curb last week in the rain, so i need to change the front left strut, and thought that once i am doing that, i can just as well put in some new lowering coils etc.

so yes, planning on using the oem struts. and i am pretty much used to a rough ride, so that wont bother me, as long as i can use them and they drop my car a bit.

the problem is, as you say, i should be looking into the something from the mazda BF chassis from 86-89, however i cant find anything on ebay.

so which cheap kit are you using exactly from the honda civic, i saw some for an insane cheap price of $15 on ebay. what year, model etc do i have to look out for? as i said, just dont want to spend too much money at the beginning, and also dont care too much bout ride smoothness, but prefer a bit of lowering.
and with the civic kit, do you have to do any mods or anything, if you want to use them with the oem struts? because here in australia i hardly have any tools at the uni, so it would be awesome if its just as simple as buy and install??

The civic kit will require cutting & welding of the stock struts to get any drop out of it. Unless you go and order super short springs for it. (5"??)

This will work with no extra work: http://www.ground-control-store.com/products/description.php/II=45/CA=87 (http://www.ground-control-store.com/products/description.php/II=45/CA=87)

i was looking at these from ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HONDA-CIVIC-92-93-94-95-EG-COILOVER-SPRINGS-LOWERING-CH-/250803670229?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a65104cd5 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HONDA-CIVIC-92-93-94-95-EG-COILOVER-SPRINGS-LOWERING-CH-/250803670229?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a65104cd5)

both offer adjustment from 0-4inches, guess thats enough for me.
you reckon they will be just a simple bolt on? no mods, welding, cutting neccessary of strut etc?

I have that second kit, or something almost exactly like that.

You will still need to cut the strut perch & weld a collar on to get any drop. The Civic struts are much different than ours.

ok thanks for the great info,

i guess i will have to look at the 86-89 323/laser coilovers that go over my oem struts, or try the 1990+ 323 and mayb i am lucky and they do fit, because i want to avoid cutting or modding anything which as you say would be the case with the civic ones.

I used the GC kit and it's not really plug and play. You need to figure out your spring height and weight ratio for front and back. You need to trim the original perch for the springs because they interfere with the way the GC lower perch sits. I also needed to buy spacers and helper springs from Eibach to make them work right.

One thing about OEM struts and coilovers...Don't expect those struts to last if you are looking to lower the car. If you are going to use them get them at a place that offers a lifetime warranty...so do not cut off the perches if you want to take them back.
