Not starting. Neutral Safety Switch?
« on: November 26, 2010, 04:51:00 PM »

So my '93 hasn't been starting the last week or so. I thought it was the battery but cleaned the cables, had it checked, and still nothing. At times I'll hold the key on and just pump the clutch and it'll start. Once it starts it usually will start and stop for the rest of the day. But by the next day, same problem. I was told that it is possibly the Neutral Safety Switch but I have no idea where to find it. Ideas?

There is a switch on the pedal assembly. It is adjustable, but tricky to get to. Thats the starter interlock switch.

I'm not an expert, but a manual trans doesn't have a true "neutral safety switch" - in my experience, they're only on automatics.

My manual Capri XR2 (with cruise control) had 2 switches on the clutch pedal.  When I pressed on the clutch pedal, the switches closed the circuits to

1.  Allow the starter to engage when the key is turned to the "Start" position and

2.  Disengage the cruise control (obviously, if the cruise control's on).

I don't remember which switch is which but both of them are on / activated by the clutch pedal, under the dash.

Please, Capribrothers, correct me if I'm wrong.

The battery feed to the starter goes through the 80 amp fuse in the fuse block under the hood. Being near the battery may cause corrosion there, the wires are bolted to the sides of the fuse. Disconnect battery and take a close look there.

Push start it...that will tell you if the switch is bad..normally you can bypass them.

If it won't start....and you suspect the switch to be bad, push starting it will let you know either that switch is bad or the starter circuit.

50/50

You can shoot the switch easy....it will be open in one position and shorted in the other....

if you suspect yours to be bad then it would be open regardless of position.

Where in AZ are you at I am in Phoenix.....

Again for testing..shoot across the pins and in one position it should be open and the other it should be shorted...
